HID Kit for 8P SB A3

Hi folks, I'm just really trying to do abit of research into different light/bulb ideas. Im looking at a HID kit on ebay which is a can bus kit. Am i right in saying that this shouldn't then bring up any warning lights on the dash?

Ive also read somewhere that fitting HID's will blow the A3 rear wiper motor?

Any info would be good as i am pretty stuck with ideas.

    Sam

I've got nightbreakers, good performance but they are a bit yellow still compared to the led sidelights t8ups supplied me with

I've ordered Osram Cool Blue Hyper White H7's so will let you know how they look when they arrive

They are Osrams version of Philips Diamond Vision, not strictly legal but I'm not bothered

I made that mistake when I was young - burnt the headlight switch out on my Mk2 golf. Not much fun only having sidelights coming down the A9 after a days skiing LOL

I had a cheap set from Ebay before I realised the issue with the wiper motor that Fran PROMPTLY told me about lol luckerly it didnt blow the wiper but now i find nothing that really matches it

However i have talked to another person who updated his lights to a projecter style headlights with LEDs and got a working HID kit from HIDS 4 U however they start from £170 but they ask you to call up as they are aware of the issue with A3s and supply a relay harness for no extra (well i believe as the guy I was talking to never said it cost him more for that part) and I guess just draws the power from the battery not the wiring which causes the blow.

But im a waiting around tilll half way through 2012 to see how mad the cops and MOT peeps are going about the new HID law and from there either getting new headlights and a full redone front bumper with all the things I need or if its just a MOT issue then just fit in the expensive kit in with nothing else lol

Here is the link to the HIDs that the guy I talked to used:
H7 55w Xenon HID Headlight Conversion Kit for Can-Bus: HIDS 4U

I dont know if these are the Holy Grail of the HIDs for Audis but rest assured i will probably go to these as i just cant seem to find the same nice crisp whiteness of HIDs in a Bulb form xx

My new bulbs arrived and they match the look of the led sidelights Trups supplied quite nicely

Osram Cool Blue Hyper White on the left and Osram nightbreaker on the right

I got them for £15 which is a bargain compared to the £30 plus for Philips diamond vision

Your right there isn't much space but it can be done and I haven't got small hands

Pop the plastic cover off behind the dipped beam bulb

Push down on the back of the black bulb holder and the bulb holder will pop out

I second cloughy it is fairly easy todo and i got proper sausage fingers lol but the only reason im still going HID way cause I heard that even BULBS that appear to look like HID (so basically a white light or if the bulb is painted BLUE) are stilll ilegal :\ why im just keeping to the standard bulbs untill the law has been around for a few months to see what happens lol

If you simply just want a better bulb you can swap the stock out with, look at either PIAA bulbs, or Sylvania/Orsam Silverstar Ultra or the new Silverstar ZXE model bulbs. Besides PIAA and Silverstars, I would stay away from any other bulbs, as the ones I mentioned are literally about the only stock replacement bulbs that will give true increased light output that's greater than stock. Also remember that the blue'er the bulb you get, the less light it'll put out, especially in the rain in which they quite literally will not light up the road at all. If you do go for a true HID kit, I'd highly recommend going with a 6000K color temperature bulb, as that'll have the best light output with bulb color combo that you can get. 5000K is slightly brighter, but it'll have a tint of yellow to it, where 6000K has a tint of blue.

Guys i run a xenon HID and lighting company as many know as i ran a groupbuy recently ive had xenons in my a3 for three years no issues what so ever but its because ive got a special kit that ive made up and developed to get around the wiper motor problem that so many people speak of. I will warn yoiu now the cheap kits on the likes of ebay and such like will do this even the ones claiming to be canbus compatible ive tried most in the past.

I retail the kit for £100 but its available audi sport members for £80 it comes with earthed high quality ac ballasts metal bulbs not plastic ****e and its the only kit that will work in my experience on the newer bmw 1series and e90 and audi 3 models without an issue of effecting wipers. Its also 45w and not 35w like most HID kits.

    If you interested to know more / order call me direct 0 7 9 3 4 1 1 7 9 0 0

Heres it fitted to my a3 3 years no issues:-

there doesnt seem to be a clear cut off point with those bulbs and thats what really irritates me about those headlights. fair enough the bulb does not damage the wipers but HIDs should only be used in projector housings to prevent blinding oncoming vehicles.

you can see at the start of this video how clear the cut off is with OEM projectors

Thats right C_W yes it does more info on reflectors bulbs here-

To further a note on glare and HID kits that concerns some folk:-

We use H7R bulbs when fitted correctly these do help stop alot of the glare people on this thread are refering to.

Its common place by alot of members it seems to think that HIDS have to be used with glass oliptical projector lenses (like the a3 with facctory HID uses for instance) but in fact many of the earlier mercedes and lexus vehicles ran whats known as a d2r bulbs again without elipical projector glass eye lenses.

Note the blackout strip on the bulb to cut upwards glare:-

    h7r

D2R - as used on some early mercedes bmw and lexus vehicles which use HID from factory without the glass eye eliptical projector lenses

Heres a comparion of d2s and d2r you can see the difference a s3 uses d2s for instance as it has eliptical projectorlenses

The difference between D2R and D2S
bulbs is the ceramic paint located on the
quartz capsule of D2R bulbs. The
ceramic paint makes the D2R bulb ideal
    for applications that use reflection
aiming instead of projection through a
    lens to illuminate the road.

    D2R :-

D2S bulbs as audi use and S3 uses:-

Finally the codition of the headlamp itself can be a key factor in glare a dirty lense will scatter light everywhere more so on non projetor lenses but even on oem projector ones too. Theis is why they MOT is supposed to stipulate HID is used on cars with headmap wash only (note alot of the japan made cars with Factor HID dont though especially imports) I guess they dont have much dirt on the roads over threre but at the end of the day we all know headlamp wash is neither as use as an ornament in actually cleaning the healamp itself in any case.

Hi no buddy im running bi xenon (i have an extra pair HIDS in high beams also) theyre the 55 watt excel versions tbh m8 this is the downside of the factory a3 factory xenons they use a shutter mechanism and the a3 ive converted using kicks more light out on high beam for two reasons than this.

    1. Its not using a shutter mech and a single bulb for both hi and low beams ie theres actually an extra bulb that illuminates for the high beam.

    2. The std audi oem system run at only 35 watts the systems im using here run at low 45w and high 55w respectivley .

Good news is for oem xenon owners is that il be developing an upgrade to take the wattage up using premium ballasts / phillips ultron soon and it should run in at under £150 hopefully
