    Audi S3 Rev problem

Ok so for the first time since owning my s3 i decided that i would give it a little stick.. So i put my foot down and let the revs travel at about 5k revs the engine seemed to die as if there is a rev limiter. the car jolted and would not go any faster. I let my dad take it for a spin and it did the same thing. But he put his foot down a second time and it didn't do it any more.... Although the revs when they hit about 5-6k, the needle looks very bouncy the dial does not move as smoothly as it does on the way up to 5k revs. What could cause this problem has anyone had this problem before? The s3 is on 70k miles 07 plate its mint other than this. Has warranty also

NOTE: I installed a Forge DV spacer just before i found this problem never had the car at 5k revs before hand so would not know if it did it before. Tonight i took the Forge spacer off and it still does it.

Hi there it could have a rev limiter on the car , to keep things safe ,, i had one on my bmw330 i would come off the motorway stop at roundabout,, and try to floor it it felt like there was a problem holding back .. If i rev my s3 now in neutral gear it only revs to 4k so there must be a rev limiter, best to check your diverter value just to see if its ok , but if there was a problem with the dv ,split in the piston etc it would be a bit rough going though the gears at high revs..

    Spark plugs - check
    Coil packs - check
Boost leaks - check (are you running a revision D Dump Valve?)
    Fuel filter - check
    VCDS error codes - check
    VCDS data logging - check

If all above = Yes, head to specialist or warranty provider. Rev limiter doesn't kick in till about 7,000rpm from memory.

Warren is absolutely right. You can chase around for days with random ideas but if you follow his list you should find the fault pretty quick. Check VCDS error codes first TBH .

On reflection, I agree with Paddy, if you have VCDS at your disposal then best to check that first as it may save you going off on a wild goose chase if your issue is for instance something like a MAF.

If you don't have immediate access best health check you can do is check colour of your tail pipes and whip out a plug to see how things are looking run wise.

I don't have vcds it was last scanned by itwasntme at adi and it brought up no faults apart from hvac comms error which was cleared. The car seemed like it had a rev limiter but then when I put my foot down again it did not do it. The needle was quite jumpy it was not smooth . I don't have a rev D

My warranty is with Audi. It's approved used and I don't expect to have a problem after 1000 miles

Only problem when you take it to them is unless there is a glaring fault code they won't have the first f@@king idea what it's. They are little more than fault code technician / part fitters now.

Worth taking it back to them just in case, but as I, Paddy and many others will confirm, theyre just not set up to fault find / log, driven purely by error codes I'm afraid. Sometimes your better off saving time and just going straight to a quality independent who is ACTUALLY interested in the brand (hard to believe I'm typing this with labour rates in excess off £100 + VAT!).

If it all gets long with Audi and you want an excellent independent to diagnose (or fix) the problem then let me know and I'll forward you the details.
The company was set up by a former Audi/VAG mastertech of 25 years and they've always been brilliant everytime I've used them.

Located in NW London, 15mins away from Ace Cafe.

Their prices are pretty decent. Labour rate is about 60% of Audi's and twice they've managed to diagnose a problem for me which Chingford audi failed at.
I get them to do my servicing now too.

Ok so today I bought a rev D diverted to see if it fixes the problem. Audi told me that it was an air charge error. And said they was too busy to fix it for me. Nice.... Buy an s3 with warranty and extra sparkly bits but the after sales is terrible.

Anyway I will post up what happens when I fit it later tonight

Did you ever get to the bottom of this issue?

I have a very similar issue with my S3 (2007), it hits a rev, usually 5000 and then cuts out, dropping to 4000 ish before it goes again. Has happened at 4000 as well, it certainly feels like a engine safety cutoff feature. No warning lights though.

I would prefer to understand what the issue is before i pay Audi £135 for a hours diagnostics.

What spark plugs are fitted? NGK are known to cause misfires and should be replaced with bosch plugs. The coil pack recall 28e9 will have been carried out before you got the car. They could have also checked boost pressures, fuel pressures and misfire counter. Another thing to check is the Cam cover breather on 2.0tfsi's. Fitting a Rev D recirc valve probably made no difference unless your original and forge ones are both faulty.
