    Tyre advice...

    Hi guys,
I'm after some advice as to what tyres to put on my wheels?? What are people running on their 18's?? My wheels will be 18X8j just after some advice on profile, stretch?? And brands you recommend?? Im thinking 225/35/18 or 225/40/18?? Or put a bit of stretch on it?? What do you reckon?? Cheers

I used to run 225/35/18 Continental Sport Contact 2's on my 318i and I couldn't fault them. Currently running Sport Contact 3's on my 17's and again they're pretty damn good.

Falken 452's, VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA, or Avon ZZ3 (or ZZ5). All good tyres choice, all mid-range price wise.

235/40/18 to keep more in line with OEM sizing. 225/40/18 to save a bit of cash.

Avoid lowering the profile as this affects your rolling radius, and thus your speedo will be out.

Id go 215/40/18 on an 8" rim. Gives a slight stretch, but retains the 40 profile for comfort. I have a almost new Dunlop SP01 for sale if your interested.

Don't forget that the 40 profile isn't a physical dimension, but is an aspect ratio of the width. Therefore, a 40 profile on a 215 wide tyre will be ever so slightly smaller than a 40 profile on a 225 wide tyre.
People often think that the profile is a measurement in mm.

You can see this on a lot of Porsches. The rears are 265/35x18 and the fronts are 225/40x18, but the fronts are physically lower profile despite the number being 5 higher than the rears.

This page explains it better than I can:

I wouldn't go 215 on an 8J, would look stupid.
You don't get an 8J as standard on an A3 but 225/40 would be fine as that's what I have run on my STi in the past.
You get 8J on the A4 but they run 235/40.
Mind and watch out for your offset.

    +1

Conti CS5s aren't around yet in all sizes, despite what tyre web places say - Conti's website is where I checked. Certainly 225/40/R18s for the S3 aren't, which is odd for such a popular hot hatch tyre size.

I've just fitted 4 GY Eagle F1 Asy 2s & they seem great so far. Quieter and comfier that the Michelin PS3s I had on before and once they've worn in I can only think they'd be an improvement on the already great original F1s...

Falken 452s are ok, but they wear pretty quickly, and the 912s are pretty mediocre.

Just fitted 4 Dunlop SP-01 225/40/18's and they were well priced to boot!. Liking them so far, local to me they were the cheapest I could find without going down too far and compromising what I thought I should put on the 3.2
