    2.0 tdi hybrid turbo

    Hi,

Think the standard turbo is on the way out as it sounds like I have the 5 0 following me when I am in the low gears so just trying to decide what to do for the best. Main dealers are quoting like £1300 to put a new standard turbo on so im thinking of going down the hybrid route. Have looked at a few companys that supply them jbs look quite tempting I have to say. Just really after some advice from anyone who has experiance with a hybrid. Is there any thing else I need to take into consideration? I.e other parts that would need changing. Im guessing the clutch would probably need replacing pretty soon after. Also what sort of gains do they give? At the moment the car is completly standard apart from suspention and a shark performance map. If anyone could give me any advice would be a great help.

    Cheers

    James

I've never understood folk modifying diesels but each to their own.
Std internals must be good for 210?
Clutch, as with every Audi, would probably be your weak point as you said.

what you got 140 or 170 if 170 you will get more than 210 as mines a 170 thats meant to be runnning 220 now with standard turbo , havent had it on rollers yet to confirm properly. but there is peeps on here with hybrids doing 280 devonboymikey and naynar come to mind who have had it done

Bagey, no offence but the 170 wont go to 220 without toasting the bv43 turbo due to high EGT. Also you need to ditch the DPF and have a really good remap to get 210 Bhp without surge ! Remember that rolling roads can be made to show whatever they want them to show, it's all in the correction factor ! You need a lot of air and fuel to get to 280 Bhp and i'm sure the internals need upgrading in order to achieve that !

Why ? Massive torque, decent Bhp and 13 sec 1/4 mile times whilst still returning 40-50mpg ! Can you do that in a petrol engined car all at the same time ? Internals are good for 250 Bhp but the CR needs reducing and the rods need upgrading to forged ones...

I was in a similiar quandry when my turbo wen pop. Thought of going hybrid but didn't want to do all the additonal mods, e.g. FMIC, exhaust, clutch, injectors, remap. You should speak with Shark Performace as they will insist the car needs to be brought in for a custom remap after the hybrid and other mods have been installed.

I went for a re-conditioned oem turbo in the end.

you dont need an exhaust, fmic, panel filter, injectors etc for a hybrid

if its manual you will probably need a clutch at some point

decatting the oem downpipe will help spoolup with the slightly less responsive hybrid, add a remap and away you go

my pd140 made about 235-240hp and 360lb/ft on a hybrid and decatted exhaust, but i had dsg so didnt need a clutch

turbo about £1000 plus vat, custom remap about 400-500, decat downpipe/exhaust just a few quid

Stop dreaming mate, no pd 140 will ever do your quoted output without supporting mods ! Everybody knows uk rolling roads are way more appreciated than usual ! To get to 240 you will need a large turbo, ported head with big valves, aftermarket nozzles and a big intercooler + a lot of internal mods just to see the quoted output !

No need to lower CR. I only know of very few people who have and more hassle then worth it. I was running 330 bhp 490 lb for 3 years no problems. I do have forged rods in now though.

You don`t need ported head or larger valves on the 16v heads. Intercoolers don`t make power they keep the power. No internal mods needed. I have been there and have done it plus loads more bhp on top.

Mikey, don't get me wrong mate but no way you will get the quoted output without internal mods ! I don't pay people to do work for me, i do it first hand and so far there are not many 300+ bhp engines on stock internals out there...

Actually UK rolling roads are all over the place.

Take your pick from the various types they all operate differently.

Personally I tend to respect the values more from a dyno dynamics dyno operated in shootout44 mode, but so much can be altered by the way it is operated.

You can run the same car twice without changing any settings and make it look as though the torqe has come in 300 rpm earlier.

Post the graphs together and it looks like you've had major mods done.

Dynos should only ever be used to determine before and afters on the same car, and even then take the values with a pinch of salt.

The only way to determine real power is either by engine dyno or by looking at the terminal velocity on a drag strip.

Hub dynos are not a bad idea, but there's no point quoting power at the flywheel, only measured power.

I know I'm like a year late lol but I'm looking at doing some mods to my A3 170 TDi.. Looked at some images of a PD engine and also the CR engine and have come to the conclusion mine is PD. Can I fit one of the hybrid turbos you guys have been on about and get 260bhp with a remap alone and no internal mods... If so what site sell these turbos? I'm new to diesels my first one not going back to petrol for a while now. sorry if I'm going over old ground.

Look at Darkside gtb2260vk kit if you want a kit that will do 250 reliably, don't bother with hybrids, i know of one that never lasted more than 6k and it's been rebuilt 3 times by Turbo DynAMICS !

Just seen the kit from dark side developments for 2g that's some impressive power for that price. Would internal be best upgrading I'm thinking yes but some people say no :/
