2.0T A3 over revving.

Evening guys.

The parents 2.0T A3 has just started over revving for no reason.

The car will start revving up to 1200rpm, then it'll drop back to 900rpm and so on. Something similar happened to my 8l S3 and it was the clutch switch, will it more than likely be this?
I've searched on here but the only threads i seem to find are about clutch slippage etc.

Get it scanned for fault codes... Could be Maf sensor or possibly a coil pack breaking down...
