did the coming/leaving home retrofit ,now the number plate lights arent working........they were an hour ago now all of a sudden error message and now nothing! also fitted footwell lighting yesterday ........ive got footwell lighting earth wire and the earth wire for coming/leaving lights on the same earth....im sure this is ok?

update.........they do come on but for about 3 seconds then go off!

Are they led's? If so they do not draw enough current and the computer thinks the bulb has blown and switches the power off in that circuit.

The only cures are either replace original bulbs or get no canbus error led's although if you do the latter then they will get very hot and may melt the plastic surrounding them.

thanks........i dont understand it,ive had them in for a round 8 months now with no issues, now after ive done the footwell and coming/leaving home upgrade the number plate led's have stopped working, well 1 of them the led has fell off ,best replace them then.....nothing do with the upgrades ive done then ?

If the led has come off then that is why the circuit is switching off ! It's a safety thing that ensures that a faulty circuit does not cause a fire. Can you see any signs of melting plastic around the bulb holder ? That may have caused it to fall off.

It is nothing to do with footwell lights or coming/leaving home lights.

nothing at all,led looks a bit black though

If you replace the led with the same type then if they worked before they should be ok again. The blackness however will be due to excessive heat ! Maybe worth replacing the other one as well.

il rplace in pairs.............i disabled the coming/leaving lights via vag thinking that was the issue.....no after activation.....they not coming on!!!!:keule: .......cant be much must be the earth from pin 12 nothing else really that can cause it,aint touched nothing else.

Oh by the way are they 36mm for the number plates or 39mm ......ive forgot!

Nothing to do with the earth I don't think. The led has overheated and probably burnt out. Why not try the standard bulbs back in first ?

Sorry, don't know the size but can't you measure the holder ?

il try the standard bulbs in tomorrow.........im on about the coming home/leaving lights............the earth from them that you connect, not the earth from the numberplate lights..........:salute:

sorry to be retarded but what are coming home / leaving lights ?

Pleasure ! Please follow up with any answers you may have for the benefit of us all !!
ok....all sorted took earth wire off pin 12 reconnected and checked it and its working ok now, number plate bulbs were replace with standard one which are also working(some more canbus led's on order):yahoo:

Like I said - watch out for the heat !

That finned aluminium bit is the heatsink to dissipate heat away from the fitting. It's not the led that produces the heat, it's the resistor which is built in to fool the canbus system. The resistor is physically fixed to the aluminium heatsink. Normally the fins allow an airflow over them to keep the unit cool but as it's enclosed in the light fitting there is no cooling effect. Try connecting the led to a 12 volt battery and after a couple of minutes see how hot it gets. It will get a lot hotter inside the fitting !

Make sure that the finned bit does not touch any plastic and keep checking on a regular basis.

Good luck !
