Question Navigation unit - Should i have an after market unit fitted?

    Hi guys,

Looking at some quotes and speaking to local companies in Bristol, it seems most of them are saying I should do down the route of having a Kenwood or Pioneer fitted.

They also says buying a RNS-E from ebay might cause problems, because those units are coded to the ecu?

They reckon there is a company called zenec.com who provide products for the S3. They also say one of the big brand companies unit will be better than the Audi unit.

I am now a bit confused?

    Thanks

    ss

To be fair they would say that as they don't sell RNS-e, but whilst they require coding, they are NOT coded to a specific ECU, just coded to the cars radio system preferences with VCDS which is a piece of p***.

To be fair the RNSE is old news. Whilst there has been a recent update (Mk2) version with hi def screen, MMI, parking info, bigger SD card capacity etc. its still by no mean state of the art for the money. Kenwood and Pioneer units are likely to offer far better functionality, but it depends if you are after a factory look or not.

Do you have Bose as that may throw in an extra complication for the aftermarket units.

Tough call, but if it was my money I'd be after a Mk2 RNS-e.

They are coded to include each vehicles options(bluetooth, bose etc) but it takes 2 minutes to recode them via VCDS.

Have no idea if I have Bose or not? I have the concert cd system, and can't see a Bose logo anywhere?

If you have Bose it will be written on the speaker grilles silver bar along the top like so:

    +1

Used to be an Alpine fan, but just couldn't bring myself to carve this car up. Sold most of it off (apart from the 12" DVC enclosed box sub which still sits aloft a cabinet in my home office). The Bose isn't my idea of great sound, but will have to do.

You need to hear the BOSE in the SB, sounds unreal, but then that also depends on the type of music you listen to

You and a 12" sub! You surprise me more and more

It's all suited and booted and respectable during the week, then at weekends I peel the tedious veneer away to become 'normalised' again!!

I mainly grew up in Ibiza so I'm probably not the most conventional of the residents in our 2.2 children street! I even have a bloody great sub on the home hi-fi system as old habits die hard! And it's not mid life crisis (I'm 38), as my wife will attest, I've always been an imbecile with the mental age and aspirations of a teenager!

Here's a pic of the Alpine H/U in my Leon, but canna find a picture of the boot install - bare with me!
