    Recently bought '07 S3 - I have a few niggles/questions

    Hi Guys,

It's been a good few years but I'm now back in an Audi.... bought myself an '07 Sprint Blue S3 with 24k miles and a nice few extras....

I'm happy with the car so far but I have a few wee niggles that I hope you guys can help with.

    1) When I lift off the throttle I hear a 'click' from under the bonnet - it sounds like a relay or something similar. This happens at all speeds when I lift off. Is this normal on the S3?

    2) When the engine is cold there is a rotational 'rubbing' noise from the engine bay at the left-hand side around the alternator area. This goes away pretty quickly when the engine starts to warm up (usually gone within 2 mins of driving). I've had a search on the forum for similar issues and some older posts suggest it could be tensioners/pulleys... any other ideas, or is that the most likely culprit?

I'm obvously hoping these issues are minor, but knowning Audi I'll need to part with some cash!

Apart from that the car is ace - I forgot how complete a package the S3 is until I drove one again.

    Cheers for any assistance

Mine does the clicky thing, assuming it's a quirk of the car but if anyone knows otherwise.....
No idea on the other noise though.

    It's an 07 S3 btw

HI the click is the dual mass fly wheel mine currently has the same problem and the rubbing sounds like the water pump as a result the cam belt requires changing. only know as i have suffered these problems on a 57 s3

    hope this helps

Thanks for the info... this all sounds very expensive... the car has only done 24k but I suppose this counts for nothing.

Is it common for water pump cambelt to require changing at such low a mileage? I'll need to get my local specialist to check it out I suppose...

Yes tbh mate, it does count for nothing IMHO, remember its 4 years old, 24k on 4yrs is very low, 6k a year for me is kinda unheard of for this car.

Also rubber etc belts dont just suffer from wear from use IMHO, they also suffer from age as in going hot/cold all the time, cracking, weathering etc, bit like the old fault of compressors that go faulty from non use, iirc the magnetic clutch.

Given the cost of repair if the belt snaps, I'd consider a new one just for peace of mind, afterall its not that much in the grand scheme of things IMHO.

    Hi again

unfortunatly mine was had only covered 25k not bet from what is supposed to be a premium brand and the previous dealer customer service was appauling!

i took the car back after a few months of ownership as there was a loud bearing noise the dealer claimed nothing was wrong, got it back noise was still there took it back again "yeah mate not problems breaings a touch noisy weve added some grease" was the second response. not being funny but only worn bearings make noise so again it went back third trip (now up to glos at my expense 85mile round trip) saw the same mechanic again and he decided it was the tensioners along with the water pump as a result cam belt was also done.

was told the clicking noise was normal however it got worse over the following few weeks so took it to another dealership and as it turned out the fly wheel apparently this is not normal so this is being replaced.

although i have knocked the first dealer the second dealership has been absolutley fantastic i could not fault them.

things that have gone wrong in 8 months of ownership
    • driver one touch module has failed and been replaced
    • passenger door has dropped several times
    • dmf
    • water pump and tensioners
    • struggles to start when cold -- probably coil packs
not bad for an approved used audi with only 20k miles on it when i got it

for a premium brand i think the first dealers customer service is Sh*te however the second has been much impecable

however when it works wow love it

I have the clicking on my car and its not the flywheel as i have had this replaced and it still does it.

I was told on here it is a butterfly valve in the exhaust opening and closing.

The clicking noise I have is a real 'sharp' noise, and happens when using a small amount of gas too. So I could be crawling with only a tiny press of the accellerator, but as soon as I lift off I get the click everytime. Its hard to tell but sounds like coming from the front of the car probably on the nearside.

Are these the same symptoms you had?

Thanks for this - that thread explains a lot - don't know why I couldn't find that when I searched!
