Heater fan 'ticking' noise

Hi i noticed a ticking noise coming from the passenger side of the car somewhere in the dash. If i increase the heater fan speed the ticking noise goes faster - presumably this means the fan is making this noise. Is this an indication the fan is wearing out or faulty - or could it just be a bit of crap got stuck in there that will dislodge itself in the future?

Also if faulty is it something that can be done DIY stylee or a dealer job?
