    Silly insurance :-)

Still shopping about for insurance and find tonight that a S3 std will cost me £430 and a S3 BE only £380 with direct line. Now remember i was with them 3 weeks ago and the premium was £640 then...
My advice is to cancel your direct line insurance and then go back to them after a week or so and half the cost :-)
Its all completely " make it up as you go along"

I remember a few years ago I rang up to declare mods, exhaust, map and air filter on a car I was thinking of buying. Car had gone from 215 to 265bhp so quote was £1200 on Saturday!!! Decided against buying it (the car not insurance!) but then got talked into it so rang back the next day, £1070 but they needed to know exactly what gain was given by each mod. Spoke to dealer, didn't know, enthusiasts, gave me a bit more help so again rang back on the Monday with some figures and asked to speak to the person who had given me the £1070 quote. Not available/never heard of them etc, but quote now £970...... Mad!

My insurance company wanted to charge me more to keep the S3 in the garage overnight rather than on the driveway

Apparently more get stolen from locked garages hence the higher risk and premium. Must be that crims have more time to work on steeling it in the safety of a garage hidden out of sight

Gonna have to sort insurance for mods coming my way too - Milltek, suspension, some form or remap (probably revo, maybe shark or evolve)... wonder if it'll work out cheaper to leave Admiral with 6 months penalty and shop around, or if they'll be reasonable. Think I might have to spend a few days calling around and getting proper individual quotes.

Divide the cubic capacity of the engine by the age of the applicant, multiply by the number of kittens the bosses cat gave birth to last month, think of a number between one and a thousand and add to the total. Throw that away, spell the applicant's street name with scrabble tiles and multiply the numbers on them together... then quote with the approximate value of the presents you were given between your 3rd and 16th birthdays.

I'm convinced they make it up as they go along.

I always use Admiral and at renewal time I get the quote from Elephant using comparison websites and phone up Admiral and say Elephant are cheaper and they always match it as they're actually the same company. I did it last night and despite my renewal notice saying they found the cheapest price they could, they magically managed to get the price down by £220 to match Elephant.

I'd love to know how you got that price Paddy, as they say insurance prices are going up massively at the moment.

I've just got a 2007 Sport, never had a claim or conviction, am 33 years old and live in an alright area, but mine is £580. I suppose it could be because my wife has only been driving for 3 years, but normally you get a reduction when you add a spouse.

Sorry, slightly off topic, but in your original post you mention the standard S3 and the S3 BE. What's the difference between a Black Edition compared to a standard S3?
I've seen BE TDi's, but I assumed it was like a posh S-Line.

I think they hiked the price up to much and are desperate to get people back. My renewal with admiral 2 months ago was near £700 for a 8 year old 3.2, phoned them and they wouldn't budge. Now online they quote £560 for a brand new S3 with stage 1...
There is no making any sense of it.

this is the best so far but its not for remap

my wife works in insurance, she reckons if your premium comes down your excess goes up and a lot to do with these premiums going up are the tossers who are claiming for whiplash when there's nothing wrong with them and as a result insurance companies are running at 400%, meaning, for every £1 they take in, they are paying out £400!!!!! But there's a new system coming in that's based on your postcode a green, amber, red system, and if your in a red area a lot of companies won't touch you

I went onto confused.com and getting a stage 1 map (11-25% bhp) will add around £50 to my quote, and getting stage 2 (>25%) will add another £1500 on to that!

When I renewed in Feb my 8L price went down about £200, then in May I got the 8P and it went straight back up to ~£650.

    UPDATE.......UPDATE........

Would you believe it !! Audi insurance who i am with would not touch a remap last week unless done by a Audi garage and who wanted and extra 15% have just said they will now do a REVO stg 1 via my local garage at +10% so £60 extra for the year.
Its now booked in for lunch time Monday.

Many thanks for all the ideas and comments here guys
    Cheers

Agree with you in part but not all Whiplash claims are fraudulent, I should know had a geezer drive in the back of me when I was stopped at lights and pain lasted ages and although I got a 3 figure settlement at the time (10 years ago) I still get twinges.

By the way your maths is rubbish. 400% of £1 is NOT £400!!

If they didn't whack premiums up for non fault claims then I bet the whiplash claims would end over night.

That might be the stupidest thing I've read on here... it's either 40000% or £4. If they were paying out £400 for every £1 taken in, they'd be bankrupt in days. Insurance is already based on postcode anyway, with a lettering system (A is best, then B, C, D etc).

You have to remember that not all insurance is equal..I paid £650 for Audi insurance because it has a £100 excess and a guaranty repair at Audi main dealers.
I was with admiral and had my last car repaired by one of their repair centres and it was just an awful job. I could have gone to Churchill for under £300 but with a new car i want it properly covered.

Yep, not all insurance is equal. That said, my wife was by far the cheapest going with Audi on our 09 A4 TDI, so I might call them up when the S4 is needing re-insured.
    Looking for the right A4 Quattro. 1.9 TDI / 1.8T or 2.0T...

You have the right to send it where you want. I had my car repaired last year, Admiral wanted to send it to a generic shop but I requested it went to the official VW/Audi repair center.

My insurance is cheaper with my misses than without her. At the moment 1250 per year full comp.

We should just think ourselves lucky we're not 17 and insuring our first car nowadays.
We've got 2 apprentices at work and a friends son who have all just passed their tests at 17. 2 have got 10 year old 1.0 Corsa's (the 3 cylinder engine) and the other has an old Ford Ka. If you add what they paid for all 3 cars together it comes to less than a grand, but their insurances are £3300, £3400 and £4100.

If my insurance was that much I'd probably have to give up driving!
It's really no wonder why young lads don't bother getting insurance, which then pushes everyone elses up further.

TBH mate its not what you drive...its what you hit and if any of them hits you or me then the cost of repair to their car is immaterial. Stats show a majority of these young drivers will have a third party claim within the first year.
I think this is the point a lot of people are missing in the above posts where they compare the premium to what they drive where as a lot of that premium is actually based on the likelihood of them hitting something else and maybe only 20% on what they drive.
Ibis white Revo S3 and now matching Vivaro LWB HR 2900 :-)

Many people are alive because its illegal to shoot them.
