I found two floors with DSG
Firstly I like changing gears.
Secondly you can't get DSG with a 170 Quattro...
is anyone running stage 2 / 2+ with a dsg(s-tronic) box what are the limits for hp and torque on the S3 box's ?
Before buying my manual,i looked into problems with the dsg as well as dpf filters as there seemed to be many people having problems with both on various vag sites etc
From what i read they have 2 clutches (aparently when sitting at lights/hills you have to use the handbrake/N or risk killing them),many sesors/solinoids inside the box as well as needing a fluid change every 40k costing around £150 and gearbox rebuilds costing 2 - 3k plus it put alot of question marks in my head
I also read that they hesitate on which gear to select when pulling onto roundabouts/lights etc at low speeds which i thought would be a pain driving in town (stop start traffic)
For me there is just to much to go wrong with the dsg and they aint cheap hence i also went for a non dpf model too lol
Call me old fashioned but give me a manual any day.
Just my 2p
The debate on N/Handbrake verses sitting with your foot on the break seems to still be waging on.
Clutches should be able to handle alot of power before needing a clutch upgrade (which won't be cheap)
Did quite a bit of Googling before purchasing the car.Do you have any links to this debate?
I wouldn't mind checking it out. Cheers
thats what i like to hear now got to wait for the first service as it's free and if no disaster by then i will start unleashing some power hoping to get 380 out of it when finally finished will that be ok on the standard box ? toying witht the idea of a GT3071 any idea how you upgrade the box ? is it a whole new box ?
2 new clutch plates. Where you based? What sort of figures you looking? You're standard clutch will be fine to support 450/500bhp

Automatics of any type just feel like fast go-karts to me. I like doing the gears, so I see no need to change.
Also, I think the manual is ingrained on the British psyche, it'll take a long time for people to change when manuals are still available.
Finally, if my mates saw me driving an automatic, regardless of whether it's faster, I'd never hear the end of it. The phrase flappy paddle doesn't help.
I think I'd just get bored with nothing for my left leg or arm to do.
I'm so old I remember when automatic gearboxes were for old people who drove Rovers. Macho young men grabbed a gear knob and manly did they play with it, changing gears lots of times and making out they were so in charge.
Nowadays it is SO different, but then so are the gearboxes themselves. Why even boy racers like a Mr Hamilton use them when wizzing around race tracks. I rest my aged case.
As ever my legs etc were starting to stiffen up during the drive, this wasn't a problem though as even though I was stuck in stop/start traffic on the motorway I could put my left leg up on the dashboard above the air vents to stretch it out while driving.
Apologies if I broke forum rules posting links to discussions elsewhere - I was asked!
For those with DSG can you explain when you say you mostly drive with it on manual, only occasionally letting it select gears. On my A3 I cannot see how this can be done, as auto mode is re-enabled after 8 seconds of not changing gear.
If you go for a gear can you override the 'return to auto mode'. Actually, come to think about it, this is what fecked me off last time I drove one, if I wan't manual override I want full control, not nanny state I've give you a bit of free reign then haul you back in after a few seconds. Yes, technically its brilliant, but I would find it as frustrating at times as I'd find it useful. It's not that I think manual is better persay, its not the future, I just like changing gear as part of the driving experience.

Brilliant. Wish you had written the manual. I'll give it a go :thumbsup:The DSG only returns to 'auto mode' after 8 seconds if the centre lever is left on the right-hand side in auto mode. If when the lever is in D you move the lever to the left it changes to 'manual or tiptronic mode'.
I note that when you use the paddles or stick to manually change down, maybe prior to descending a hill to minimise using the brakes there is a pause as if the car is momentarily in neutral which delays the braking process. This is overcome of course by selecting the lower gear a tad sooner than usual. Maybe the delay is no more than when a human is changing gear using a conventional manual gearbox.
