Car cut out whilst on the M1 today - 'Relay' Error Message...

    Hey guys,

As the title says, on the way to work this morning (7.30), i was driving on the M1 and my A3 completely cut out on me. Brakes went stiff... Couldn't turn the wheels... I'm surprised i managed to get it to the hard shoulder if im being honest!

After waiting hours for the AA, finally managed to get it towed home. I mechanic had a look at the car and hooked it up to his computer, it displayed "Power Supply Relay for ECU (J271 or J363) Electrical Malfunction" as en error.

Does anyone know what this error message means? Or experienced this before? How did you resolve?

    Car spec:
    56reg A3
    2.0TDI 170bhp
    S-Line
    DSG

    Any advice/help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

First thing to do is unplug the relay and plug it back in...you might be lucky but if not then replace it with another.
Its ether on the fuse board under the bonnet or on the end of the dash. My guess is under the bonnet as thats where the relay "fuse" is as well. Obviously check the fuse first, its listed in the manual fuse list

    Thanks for the suggestion Paddy.

Took the relay out an plugged it back in, the car still doesn't start. Will be going to Audi/VW to get a new one and see if that works in a bit.

    Any other suggestions??

Unfortunately not yet mate, picked the new relay up from Audi earlier, but haven't had a chance to fit it yet.

I hope this does the trick... But then only a matter of time til the "injector problem" kicks in

the 170s have too many problems and its not just the A3's. you get the DPF sensor problems there 125 each from dealer plus fitting, then you get the injector problems which is 1000s and so on. but when there driving properly they are a pleasure to drive nice smooth power.

TBH with the price of these cars they should not have a known series of problems 5 years into production, Disgraceful.

Your problem is an injector is fudged, I diagnosed the same fault for smudge_don a while back, same fault exactly, I took rocker of, disconnected injectors one at a time & it started when a certain one was offline, also fault cleared with vcds when disconnected that injector, then came back & wouldnt start when reconnected, its not related to a relay afaik.

See if Mikey has any 170 injectors, failing that maybe can find 1 or supply new to you, deliver.

Crazy but that is the official way to find out which one is stuffed, unplug them one by one until the car starts.

Thanks for your input Nige. Think my mechanic is planning to do this today to identify root cause (which injector).

    PM'd Mikey too.

    PM'd you as well bud.

Forgive me for Hi-Jacking the thread but how much is an Injector out of interest?. I was told that mine had had all 4 changed under warranty. As one had played up twice.
Is there anything that can be done to keep them in tip top condition or is it just one of them. They go when they go??

Found this from TDISport and VAGOC:

    NEW improved loom 03G971033L @£82.28
    Injector 03G130073TX @£556

Old part numbers, just so you can cross reference, this info came from Audi Hatfield.
    Loom 03G971033D
    Injector 03G130073MX

The old loom: Part number suffix 'D' dropped on 01/04/2008 and changed to suffx 'L' according to ETKA.

But, according to this thread - Westfield Sports Car Club Printable Version of Topic VAG 170 injector failure, possible VOSA action apparently you can get them for £150?? Can anyone confirm this??

    Hope that helps..

Feck me! Is it only possible to find the part numbers of the injector by taking the rocker cover off? I would like to think that they would of been changed for the newer style do i take it that the newer ones resolve the issue??

Isn't this a little bit Coil pack.......... For those who have burn't the clear stuff! Hmmm vorsprung who!
