    New A3 170 TDI Bedding in

    Hi Guys. After a long wait i finally got my new A3 sportsback. the question i have is will the bedding in be 1000 or 2000 miles? i am trying not to boot it at the moment just in case but want to see what it can do. not that i am a boy racer or anything

    i relaxed a bit more on mine after 1500 miles. that's what my salesman told me (i know most some of them are clueless so obviously i don't take his word as prophecy). even now, 15 months later ive never been in the red zone, diesels arent meant to be revved hard

    try not to exceed 3500 revs for the first 3000miles

    Modern diesel engines are tested and bedded in from the factory. Only reason to drive carefully is to make sure nothing falls off and that everything works brakes,steering etc as these haven`t been tested at road speeds.
    06 Audi 2.0 PD140 Sport TDI Quattro S-LINE.
    Old engine 330 bhp @ flywheel 263 bhp @ wheel 490 lb torque. Audidriver write up HERE
    Now stripped and playing with an uprated Cryo treated engine fitted with bigger turbo,water/methanol,uprated injectors etc etc.Wanting 400 bhp and 500 lb torque.

    Other car 500+ bhp MK4 Golf R32 turbo.

    I'm on my fourth new diesel now. I've always driven them from new as I intend to continue driving them. They have all got to 90,000 miles without any issue. Saying that, they have all been company cars. If they were mine then I might be a bit more careful running them in. There is a section in the manual about it.
    I got my new 170 tdi last Thursday. I have driven it 800 miles so far as I would normally.

    I took it easy for the first 1000 miles in my 140tdi BE, trying not to labour the engine too much then increased the performance after that. It will take a good 10k miles to fully run in though, as soon as I reached around 10-11k the engine seemed to perform better and got also got improved mpg.

    I agree with Nick and had this same conversation with a work mate yesterday, I drive company cars and just recieved my A3170BE this week and i drive it from the day i get it the way i will drive it through all its life, ive never had any issues..

    Yeh drove my steady for the first 1000 miles as did my bro in his 59 plate Corsa VXR.

    Had my 170 TDI Sportback for just over a month now. Done 1100 miles. I have done what i did to all of my cars i have had new (and never had major issues)

    Drove steady for first 500 miles (neither rev hard or labour engine, avoid constant engine speeds for long periods of time)
    500-1000 miles start to give it the beans every now and again, more often the closer to 1000 miles.
    After 1000 miles - let rip!!

    The most important thing, for this and any other car is that you make sure the engine is up to temperature before you rev it hard. Also you will be able to tell the difference later in the cars life when a car has been driven hard. It will feel better and more responsive - not saying it is faster though!!

    Incidentially, my car doesn't appear to have used any oil in the first 1100 miles. Anyone else find this?

    I have had my A3 SB BE 170 S-Tronic about 2 months (2000 miles) now and not used any oil.

    Good. It's my first diesel and given that the dealer gave me a litre top up when i collected the car i was expecting to have to use it.

    Ditto - My first diesel too and i have been checking my oil frequently (too frequently to be honest) as i was expecting it to drink it...oh well at least i know i am not alone..lol

    Drive as normal from day 1. The company I work for makes the rings (and pistons) for VAG group, and our recommendations are always to use variable load and revs to help bed the rings. The worst thing you can do is sit at constant revs for the first few hundred miles or just pootle around at low revs/low load. You'll soon find high oil consumption due to bore glazing. My 140 BE was driven like normal (and I don't spare the horses ) from day one. It had it's first service at 18k and didn't need a drop of oil in this time.....

    my Black Edition is due 1st service on Friday and is at 18300 miles and again hasn't needed a drop of oil and I am paranoid after previously owning an Alfa 156 which needed almost constant topping up

    Do they not have a stage in the map which automatically switches at a certain point? i thought most new cars had this now,


    My dads Alfa and my mates 3 series both had an ECU "bedding in" stage where the ECU would only let the engine run at 70% (ish) for the first X amount of miles, my Dads Alfa even told him when this stage was over (approx 1400 miles) and you could definately feel the difference.

    Would of thought Audi would have put somehting like this in...

    thanks for the replies guys. i have been driving it steady and gave it a blast on the weekend. i then realised that it is a little thirsty. wont be it booting very often now. i drive a varying speeds. town driveing swell as bypass on the way to work. done a few long drives in it aswell.
