    S3 maybe going!!

I have a couple of hours booked in a A4 Avant black ed 136 bhp diesel tomorrow morning, i am thinking of swapping to try and save a few ŁŁŁ i don't do a terrific mileage maybe around 10000 a year but am really fed up of going to fill up every week sometimes twice a week. My thoughts are that i may save some on the payments as they have a finance offer on them at the mo and save a little on the fuel, ins, tax etc just not sure how it will go down losing 130 ponies!! if it isn't too bad i may go for it and save some pennies and buy a mk4 R32 in a couple of years garage it use it summer weekends only and it may one day be worth more than i paid one day.

    Thoughts please

Oh and if anyone is interested in the S3 onlt 6000 miles on pm me...

If your going for a summer car ,Why not keep the s3 buy an old 140 diesel for work for say 7k use the S3 for summer only .Im sure a low miles S3 will hold its price in the future.

Yeh thought about that but seen as the S3 is only 7 months old it is still going to lose around 4k per year

I have to admit whether we like it or not, most of us will be going down this road sooner rather than later. Weekly refills are now Ł70 and while its affordable it does piss me off paying all that tax on top of all the other tax. I just wish they had made a 170 quattro dsg A3. and i would buy tomorrow.
I know what you mean about the R32 as a fun car. Its the same thought i have with my 3.2 A3. There will never be another 3.2 V6 3 door hatch..ever. Its the last of the line and the end of an era.

the 140 A4 does not have the sense of urgency about it but at the end of the day it goes along at the same speeds as everyone else in the traffic jam and on the open road come to that. I had one for a couple of weeks last year as a loan car and spec'd up nicely its a nice place to be.
PS...i had a 170 a4 as well and it was just as economical and worth he extra for a bit more grunt

I had an A4 140tdi Auto avant loaner last year and tbh it felt very flat. I reckon you will need at least the 170. Wasnt crazy about the fwd set up neither.
Like Paddy said though, in SLine guise with AMI etc its a sperb cabin.
    Good luck

About a tank a week but its the jam into my home town of half an hour a day that eats fuel not the mileage. I only do 8 miles to work. It takes up to 45 mins to get home, i join the back of the jam averaging 30mpg and its reading about 18mpg by the time i get home.

Yeah my fridge is a costing me a lot to run a month, im going to sell it for less than i paid and spend more money on a more efficient one, it runs on a more expensive fuel but uses less. Should save me a few pounds a week, although the initial outlay will take years to justify it.

Stop worrying about it, spend less on other things and enjoy it. If you smoke; stop, if you drink; drink less; if you eat out; eat in more. You will save more money like this than selling a car to buy another to save a few pounds at the pumps.

If he is doing 10k a year in his S3 it will be costing about Ł2500 in fuel which he could halve with a 140 A4. he would also halve his road tax. Trade in now for a 3 year old S3 is about 16k for an absolute top spec car with all extras, that car would have cost 30k 3 years ago so you are looking at 14k loss there and considerably more at todays prices as fuel cost and Road tax make the cars less desirable. So we are looking at 3 years fuel saving at Ł3600 which is Ł4k with road tax + depreciation of 14k so its a cost of Ł18k over 3 years + more expensive running cost like tires and servicing etc.
You could buy a very nice 140 A4 for that 18k and still get 6k back for it when you sell it in 3 years...and pocket the money you get back on a 6 month old S3
you see statistics are your friend

A 3 year old top spec S3 could easily get Ł20k, a cars worth what someone is willing to pay so depends really. Also driving style is a big factor, when i use my mums boyfriends warrior i rag it to get to speed as its so slow, where as my S3 is easy to get to speed with little input, so i use loads of fuel in the diesel warrior and not much in the S3.

Also if you think diesels will hold there value in a few years you are mad, the road is going to be flooded with them as most new cars at the moment will be diesel due to car work schemes making them more desirable and the high petrol costs/ tax costs with non diesel cars. I can see some superb engined cars (like the S3, which has a 4 year run as engine of the year) which return superb MPG and still provide speed hold their value well.

I actually made a profit on my R32 even though fuel was worse than when i bought it. There will always be demand for cars like the S3 as they will get rarer, average diesels will be common sight.

I made about 3K on my R32 DSG, as prices were on their arses but sold at the right time Jules86 is right I think these type of cars will get rarer. I was thinking about getting a scooter to go to work on as I only work about 5 miles away, as that would save me a fortune in fuel, but to be honest I don't want the government pushing me out of my car which is exactly what they want. They want us all driving around in bubbles all the same like robots!!!

Fact is jules Paular is selling his 3 year old S3 which is top spec/ fully loaded and without doubt the best i have seen. The dealers offered him Ł16k. against a new A4. He is now trying to sell private but has reduced the price twice, now Ł17k.
The reason diesels are average common sight is because that's what people want. the S3 in its next incarnation is going to be a Ł40k+ car which is going to make the Focus RS and Megane 250 CUP etc look bloody good value at half that :-) an extra 20k for a watered down version of 4 wheel drive is a lot of dosh.

ANOTHER "what`s this S3 worth" thread.....

I dont agree its what people want. Very few people buy new, most cars hit the second hand market from car schemes and nearly all of those cars are diesel. Diesel is usually the only choice within a company as you end up paying a lot more for a powerful, or even equivalent, petrol.
That car standard (modifications hugely reduce your market) would have sold at Ł20k easily before Christmas, it reflects the market now. Obviously if petrol goes up the second hand values may well drop, i can see a 2nd hand market for these cars significantly increasing in value though over the next 3 years once people realise what a huge mistake they made buying diesel cars.

Ive made a profit or sold at what i paid on my last few cars so my predictions are usually fairly good.

Also there is no way Audi will price out the RS3 for an entry level S3 that shares a generic VAG platform. I expect with options the next S3 will hit Ł40k, but i expect starting at Ł31-34k

Who on earth would want a S3 at starting price ? The RS3 is an end of the line model so its cheap. Expect a new S3 to be more than a R20 Golf. or Sirocco R. and i priced one of them up at Ł37k thats Ł4k more than equivalent spec S3 now !! you admit that Pauls S3 would have fetched Ł20 before Xmas...now he is struggling to get Ł16-17K and petrol is only going to spiral upwards. I am old enough to remember the last time this happened and you couldnt give an E-Type away....lol. This time it will be worse because the motorist is a cash cow and he will be milked to he sqeeals by the government and oil companies. When i started driving petrol was 16p ltr :-) it used to cost me nearly Ł2 to fill my Honda 750 ............and believe me i have sold a few motors at a profit as well. I know someone trying to sell a 2010 Evo X at 10k under what he paid for it but he stands little chance of selling it at 18mpg.

Plenty of people go for few options, the amount of S3's with just one or two options ticked are incredible!

Yes now is indeed hard times to sell a car, unfortunately people associate hot-hatches with bad mpg figures though. I find the S3 phenomenal on fuel but i also never check what it gets as i dont care. If i wanted to save a few Ł i would look elsewhere, would never move to keep a car though lol

My car hasnt been worth 20K for a long while.
There is no way it would have achieved 20K before Xmas. (Xmas 2009 maybe)

My car has lost 8K in 3 years, it certainly didnt lose nearly half that in the last 3 months!

The local AUDI dealer had a like for like spec car as mine around last October and it was up for 20K which was around 2K more than similar stuff in the private ads.

My reason for going diesel is that I need 4 drs anyway and as my annual mileage is about to double its the obvious thing for me. Almost certainly will end up with a 2010 320d, the latest efficient dynamics have mega mpg and take such a thump in the first year that lightly used examples can be had for up to 10K of new list price so a bit of a bargain.
Will be nice to half the safety net of a warranty again too.

Ive alway been a bit of a derv sceptic and Im not sure how I will get on with one, so the plan is ensure there is nothing outstanding on the car after 12months so at least I can change it if I cant live with it.

    Cheers

A car is worth what someone is willing to pay mate, im 100% certain that you could have achieved Ł20k for it before christmas. I sold my R32 for profit before christmas and they dropped a few grand about a month after.

If people cant shift them they drop the price, then other people follow and thats (in a simplified way) how cars drop so quickly in value.

There seems to be more S3's for sale at the moment so more competition means lower prices.

Good luck with the sale and future car though

Ok, but I cant see how a car can lose 5K in 33months then lose 4K in only 3?
I think youve done very well with the R32 and fair play on that but Im sure thats the exception not the rule.

I looked at changing to ana EVO X before Xmas and when pricing my car up, 18K was about right for a private sale.

Cheers for the well wishes anyhoo.

hmm some what of a debate now!! well i did today take out the A4 Avant Black Edition and no it didn't blow me away (not that i expected it to) it wasn't fast but neither was it slow, it was definately more spacious than the S3 and the interior was a nicer place to be, more modern and nice little touches.

The Electromechanical handbrake (or whatever) i liked along with the intelligent key although not exactly sure what benifits it has, i plan to try and make a slight lifestyle change along with the car change, i want to spend more weekends away camping with the little boy amd not so little girl, just spending more time together with the family. The A4 was perfect for getting everything in with plenty of space for passengers ( not the back seats filled like they would be with the S3).

To sum up then i dont think i would mind a diesel although would like to try the 170 as i feel it could do with some more grunt and would like quattro, problem is these add quite a bit extra onto the price, the quest for a nice used example will probably start now...

    PaulAr

I too have been looking at the 320d and 325d nice cars they are too only criticism is the interior isnt quite as nice as the A4 although like you say the engines are further ahead in terms of technology...

As Paddy says i have a feeling more and more people will be making this decision sooner rather than later.

    jules86

I see your point about the goverment pushing people into these decisions but ultimatley it is whatever is best for each individual i for one am not saying i can't afford the S3 just don't want to give up some of the other luxuries i have, i don't smoke and don't particularly drink excessively either...
Each to ther own i guess and lets face it if we all thought the same the world would be a very boring place

Indeed mate, we are in the same situation and have very similar views and the same dilemna on this, in fact the A4 I priced up was a A4 Black Ed 170 quattro on a PCP.

You are right about the cabin too, however I am holding out for a 320 Business Edition or a car with the Business pack so you get the Sat Nav/i drive thingmy and it makes the cabin MUCH better especially in M Sport guise with leather. They are cheaper than the an equivalent A4 quattro and better mpg too so its the more sensible choice for me. if im going to part with my S3 then it might as well be for the most frugal premium saloon on the market.
I really like the look of the current A4, in particular the Black Ed, and the cabin is special.
    Dilemna to be sure.

    Good luck
