Hi All,

Was wondering if someone could help me diagnose a rather concerning issue im having!

Basically when I went to work last night, car was fine, however when starting it up after finishing this morning, there is this rather loud rapid knocking noise, that speeds up and slows down with the revs.

I stuck my head under the bonnet, and its coming from the left side of the engine bay (looking at it from the front) somewhere off of the drivebelt. Possibly alternator, but sounds like it could be further down into the engine bay.

Anyone experience similar issues or any ideas what it could be?

TIA :)

Dave

Any vibrations inside the car, or thorugh the pedal box?

Sounds a bit dubious.

no vibrations at all, purely just noise, quite an offputting noise though. Car's still driving and idling fine, just worried that if i continue driving it, something will go pop and suddenly ive got a very expensive repair bill. Will go and get a video of it in a min

I'd take it easy with it and limit any mileage, and get it on VCDS A.S.A.P.

Better safe than sorry

i've just scanned it with vcds (paid for the full version, and forgot i had it - im tired lol) didn't show any DTC's though

I've taken a vid of it and uploaded to youtube, just waiting for the link to become available and will post it up. Thanks for help warren :)

Newby on here due to my 61 plate S3 starting to do this! Not nearly as bad as yours but it is is in the same place as yours! I've been doing some digging around and all I can come up with is the DMF (dual mass flywheel) going faulty. Apparently this has some spring assembly inside it and if it starts to fail it makes this noise. I'm going to book mine into Audi as its only done 13k and its coming up to a year old!!

Newby here my 61 plate s3 has just started doing this! Not as bad as yours, I've been doing some digging and only thing I can find is the DMF (dual mass flywheel) apparently when this starts to fail it makes the noise we are describing. In my case however it stops when the engine is warm? Not sure if this is relevant.. I'm gonna book mine into Audi as its still under warranty. It's only done 13K!

drive belt tensioner i would say, im replacing mine either this week or next, mine is a fainter noise, but dont qoute me on it for some reason they tend to fail quite allot on the 8P's

Could be but mine sounds much lower down in the engine. Before I read about the DMF I was deffo thinking big ends :-( its that kinda sound..

take it to a specialist so they can inform you or atleast drop the sump

I think thats normally that the sound goes away when the engine is warm, I'm pretty sure most S3 TFSIs will sound like this they are very noisy engines

A specialist or Audi? As I say it's still well in warranty and standard never touched it!

Is this not right, these engines are very noisy on startup, are you saying with your issue is that it's constant even after a few mins when the revs have dropped?

It's only just started doing it.. I know they are very tappy engines but this is a clunky noise. I have also just discovered it deffo gets quieter when the clutch is depressed. So fingers crossed its not the engine!

It is coming from the same place as the video shows? Kinda low down though...

If it's still under warranty, get it booked into Audi asap before something fails.
