Hi all,

Had my Haldex oil & filter changed yesterday at 40k by my local, trusted garage as part of a service. On the way home & again today, there's a distinct new mid pitched drone / light rumble between 30 and 55mph coming from the rear, whether I'm on the throttle or not - it's road speed related.

Noise is now getting quieter, but is it something to do with the new oil kind of "bedding in" and getting warmed up? They've done nothing else at the rear that would explain the noise. They've not changed Haldex oil before, so couldn't tell me what the noise was, although they've been out with me & heard it. They put 1 litre of the correct Audi grade of oil in (I saw the bottle) & the Haldex unit is totally dry & clean underneath.

Any ideas? Paranoia?

Cheers,

Al

UPDATE

As I believe in this forum thing to help save others time, effort and money, I thought I'd give an update...

Despite the resounding number of replies on here, I give great thanks to Paddy and others over on VAGOC, who correctly spotted that my garage had indeed emptied my diff unit, then only refilled the haldex unit. :sadlike:
So I drove 250 miles without oil in the diff, whilst moaning all the time at my garage as to the noises it was making. Bye bye diff! :bye:

They've been ****** good as ever and are now paying for a nearly new rear diff / haldex unit to be fitted that's come from Steve at Autorads / Stattler. Great service there as well.

So as more of our cars reach the 40k mileage mark, it's worth making sure your chosen garage know all about the haldex unit and the two seperate drain bolts...:icon_thumright:

Thanks for the info mate, about to get my 40k service done, Audi want nearly £500 :faint: to do a couple of oil changes (engine & haldex), plugs & pollen filter. Dont call them stealers for nothing :noway:
Is there a filter for the haldex system ?

Some good info here..

Audi wanted the best part of £550 for my 40k service.

I got them to complete the Haldex coupling service and carried out the rest of the service with a specialist. Most of the parts were original Audi anyway such as the platinum NGK's and filters.

I read on another post about having to specify for the Haldex filter to be changed otherwise Audi won't do it. Seems strange to me that this would be the case, oil and filter changes go hand in hand right??

Emailed the dealer to see if this was completed or not!

Yes - the haldex filter is a little cartridge jobbie. About £25 from Audi or £15 from TPS with discount. There are 2 different filters & oils depending how old the car is. Older units have a syringe type filler, whereas the newer units A2 oil comes in a 1 litre top up oil can. Even Audi parts dept were a bit confused until they got my chassis number.
It should be around £100 all in for haldex filter & oil change. I've asked a few these last few days!

Too right Davey! The 40k service needn't be that expensive...

If the stealer did the haldex filter, it'd surely be itemised on the invoice? I understood that they don't do it unless asked & the Audi parts guy yesterday confirmed this to me.

As you say, I just wanted the reassurance of fresh oil & a fresh filter, which seems logical to me too!

I was down there when you were on the phone with Craig down there yesterday and to be honest all three of us were speechless

Yeah - it was bit of a shocker! Not as much as the TPS price for a new haldex / diff unit though - £2580!!! :faint:

Just glad that Steve had a replacement unit in that I could grab. It'll be fitted tomorrow.

The garage who did it are really great with diesels & other things, but they admitted they'd not done a haldex unit before. Bet they won't be too keen in future either... :readit:

Funniest thing though - I'm still glad I didn't let Audi anywhere near it!

yep Steve is great at stattler my a3 was in there on sat for haldex oil and filter changing
top guy plus only charged me £84
he was telling me about this problem!

Yeah antmax - it was a bit of hassle! At least my garage were great about fixing their error. It's all fixed up for free & is now working again.

Just the suspension knocking & slight hesitation to sort out tomorrow...

I checked with the main stealer who did my Haldex oil change as to if they changed the filter as well as it wasn't documented as far as I could tell on the invoice. They said the S3 doesnt have a Haldex filter and so a change was not applicable. Is the drain plug itself the filter?

WTF?? :)

Davey - that's stealers not knowing their own cars. Somewhat worrying to say the least. There certainly is one - I've seen more than one of them with my recent issues & they're itemised on Audi invoices as haldex filters.
Even my local stealer parts guy knew about the filters and they're usually cr*p!

Thank god for decent independents who know our cars...

Thanks guys

I have replied back to the Stealers protesting that that there is a servicable filter in the system. I'll keep you posted on what happens.

After passing on the filter part number (confirmed by Huddersfield & Amersham against my chassis number) to the master tech and service team they now want the car back to have another look. The master tech is still insistent that it doesn't have one. This could prove potentially embarassing for them.....Obviously WHEN they find the filter they will change it and replace the oil again if it needs to be drained.....thats if there up to the job of course :)

It does beg the question how many other Haldex services they have ommited to change the filter on.

After telling me yesterday that the part didn't exist, Audi are now saying that they didn't 'miss' the filter because of negligence - they were carrying out the job in accordance with the manufacturers information supplied. As I have told the service manager now, this clearly isn't the same information that other Audi garages carry out this job in accordance with. At the very least their product knowledge is pi55 poor and it has taken me with the help and invaluable knowledge of the members of this forum (this thread in particular) to alert them to this.

To be fair Davey, Audi dealers don't replace the filter unless you ask them to - Audi don't seem to think it needs doing...

So although they were wrong (or hoping you'd go away...) in advising you that there wasn't a filter, they are kinda just following what Audi tell them to do.

Cheers BigBird - appreciate the feedback. I haven't kicked off at them as I know they're only following guidelines, it's the inconvenience of having to take time off work to go back and get it sorted, where as other garages would have done it in the first place. Anyway it will be sorted and thats all I'm after:icon_thumright:
