Okay basically i pulled away from set of traffic lights normally about 15-20mph gaining speed upto 30 not rapidly or anything. And heard a loud pop sound. Initially i thought it was one of the tyres so looked in the driver passenger wing mirrors and saw black smoke behind the car. The car then started juddering and had no power atall. The turbo no longer sounds like its spooling and i can hear a loud gushing sound when i push on the accelerator. The car will judder when i try to pull of and i need to change gear quickly to make it move. No lights on the dash etc. Now with my cars mileage 132k i know the turbo will probably go soon or maybe it may last. I dont rag the car around. But i do know that if the turbo goes the car will not judder just be really sluggish. This leads me to believe that the Car is over fueling causing the black smoke. Could this mean that the Boost hose after the turbo that leads to the Intercooler may have burst causing the car to not receive pressure causing it to judder.

Where should i be looking first. Thanks people

NOTE: i dont have VCDS and Audi is 30 miles away. Car isnt driveable to there.

There's many reasons this could happen but your mileage would be very high for your original turbo to near its last legs
No boost could be knackered DV, IC or boost pipe come off, blown turbo, VNT vanes stuck...need to get it scanned.

Black smoke will be overfueling yes but as above could be many reasons there's not enough air getting into the cylinders, but clearly boost related.

Thanks for the quick reply unfortunately i dont have anyone near me that can scan the car. Audi is too far away and local garages dont have the equipment My brother works for Kwik fit but the master tech there has quit lol so hes taken his diagnostic tools with him.

How specifically would VCDS tell me where the problem lays being boost related?

have a look under the bonnet and see if any from the turbo to intercooler or intercooler to manifold have come off or split. this would bee my first port of call. sounds the most plausable cause. always start with the easyest route before delving in deeper.:detective2:
hope its not to terminal:thumbsup:

First thing I'd do if you cant scan it is get you head/ hands in the bay and check the boost pipes are still attached everywhere. I test drove an A3 at a trade place that had a boost pipe come off and it was turboless and juddery, so heres hoping for you its just a pipe!

Because you could scan the error memory to see if any DTC's are stored relating to boost pressure and you could also perform a log of the actual values to see if the turbo is creating any boost

Im going to be checking the Boost pipes tomorrow that come from both sides of the intercooler. Is it possible that the one or more of the seals has given way? Realistically could this caus the awful judder? Also when its driven and you put your foot down i can hear a gushing/grinding sound... sounds like air but a bit rough. Any ideas What else i could check tomorrow?

Have you looked on the map to see if someone is close to you with VCDS?? Think Staz (Leon) has the link in his sig.

I have yes. And the one person whos kinda close 20miles i have contacted twice with no reply. Everyone else is alot further away. So im pretty screwed :(

May be worth doing a new thread asking for VCDS help and name your area, someone may work there, worth a shot! Hope you get it sorted. You could always buy a cable from NHN if not, still cheaper than te Dealers and you have it for mods etc.

Believe me i would buy one if i had the money. Car needs servicing. S3 front needs to go on sline front needs to be sold.

Turbo problems? Money money money lol Paying off two holidays aswell at the same time so i cant put anything in priority if you know what i mean. the girlfriend is boss.

My brother works a kwik fit and they have a master tech with diagnostics But he decided to quit last week. W*nker

it sounds like a turbo pipe has come off mk4 golf tdi's were really bad for this kind of thing happening sundden loss of power/turbo and no turbo boost usally means a pipe has come off somewhere it used to happen on my old escort rs load pop no boost = pipe come off the inlet so i would check all the pipes before you go any further it could be something simple

Okay mate yeah going to jack the car up get under and check all the pipes and also going to buy new seals tomorrow. If that does not fix it then i have no idea :(

With all due respect mate not having a go, but prioritise, as unless the cars running, spending the dough on service, fitting the S3 front end is pointless as sitting in the drive does look lovely to you & neighbours, but for you a complete waste of money huh, if its not a boost pipe of & you cant find a scanner near you, then use your mods money & buy vcds, it'll be the best purchase you'll ever buy for your car mate :)

I will be buying from you mate. But im on zero atm. Just had to pay for holiday so got to wait till i have some more funds. Anyhow i took the whole front end apart today to find one of the intercooler boost pipes not connected atall.. So basically it popped off. i replaced all the green seals on on the pipe couplers. But noticed that the metal notches on the pipes where the metal spring clip holds onto have broken away. Poor design? Seeing as they had been serviced at audi before hmmm So basically i thought i would reconnect it with a new seal and made a harness with 5 cable ties on each one to try keep them in place. Put the whole fron end back together took it round the corner. Car drove fine..... Then POP it came off again so it looks like i need a new boost pipe. Audi told me they are 120 pounds each... Sorry but im not paying that for a bit of rubber so anyone know where i can get one cheaper? Cheers guys

scrap yard. or i guess you could make your own pipes using silicone?

its not the actual pipe its the notches on he metal coupler that clip into the inserts of the intercooler inlets its basically broken apart. Poor design but i can imagine them wearing away under pressure all the time .

looking at fitting the forge intercooler pipes says they withstand a higher pressure than the OEM look better and no doubt made better too. 120 for one or 150 for all three...

TBH look on ebay for oem ones, oem ones are fine for what you have, I run oem on a custom map thats running 230bhp with my hybrid turbo, so fair bit more boost than yours mate, without being funny & as for buying vcds of me, wasnt mentioned so I get a sale, was just to do you a favour as truly would be worthy purchase :)

I know what you mean mate i was just saying about the forge ones as audi quoted 120 for a single pipe when i could get all 3 for 150 had a quick look on ebay and could not find the right pipe. Also i know your an honest guy and its not a push sale just some informative information. I know you want the best for the members on here and i know its a piece of kit that i shoud really invest in. I do intend to but just when funds are a bit more available... Havent got a job anymore mate . Interview monday so who knows

Thats a very fair & honest reply & tbh spot on, thanks & yes I see why now, with loss of job which I'm sorry to hear, shelling out few hundred for these things is allot atm huh.

Yes mate its upsetting really. Seeing all these nice cars wishing mine was on par and having mine in such a bad way. Slowly getting there though. Had to do all the work myself spraying etc. Its tough but atleast after i finish each thing i do i get the satisfaction. Although i wish i could have just bought the car looking how i wanted it to in the beginning. Maybe in the future though. Im learning from everyone on here though so getting quite informative so hopefully i can become quite a usefull member on the forum in some time

I like to read what you just wrote about doing the work, having a go yourself is definitely rewarded with pride & just feeling very good about yourself, having learnt something, as we all started somewhere & for me everyday is a school day, learn something new all the time & not always car related.

Understand what you mean. Nothing better than the feeling of success ;) I will contact you via PM when i have the funds to order vcds i think i need a HEX CAN one for 53 plate 8p?

k the whole front end apart today to find one of the intercooler boost pipes not connected at all
thought it hsd to be a pipe come off it was a common problem with the mk4 golf tdi's you would have thought that they would have sorted it out by now lol

Here was the root of the problem

Poorly designed pressed metal notches that fall to bits over time under pressure. Maybe because audi did not fit it correctly it had created a bit of room to move and wear .

So I cut off the bayonet and bought a forge machined coupler pictured against the original here you can see is much better built. I think audi should take a note out of forges book tbh

Hi,
The same thing happened to me yesterday. I was being a little too enthusiastic with the throttle and pop. I looked under the bonnet and noticed that the intercooler pipe had come out and wouldnt stay in as the nodule had worn away.
Im driving a 2002 1.9 TDI A3.
Could you tell me the part number that you ordered?
Cheers

You sure the clip isnt secured properly, as tbh the joints are good if used properly, 1 reason why they wear imho, is if someone hasnt removed them properly by pulling the clip out properly & wedgng the ****** of, this wears the metal down, hence loose.

You would need to check your vin with audi as different models use different parts sometimes, so to be sure, give audi a bell.

I would assume that it was not put on correctly by one of the garages that has looked at it in the past. It is completely sheered off now so it wont stay in place.
I measured the worn coupling and have asked Forge if they have the part, so with a bit of luck it will be as simple as cutting of the old piece and replacing with a new coupling.

One thing that worries me is that while getting the car home, there seems to have been a fair bit of black muck sent onto the engine. Will this affect the running of the engine once its fixed?

Black muck, care to expand on that, do you mean from the pipe, probably some oil in the IC which is normal.
