Hi,

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have got a Audi A3 2.0TDI Sport, 115k on the clock.

All has been fine untill a few weeks ago, I had a coolant leak which was repaired, when I got the car back I took it out for a 'blast', I got to about 65MPH and the car lost all power! I could carry on at about 50MPH, but it had no 'pull' at all, pulled over and started back up, the car was back to normal again??? This has not happened since, after looking on forums I believe this could of been that the car went into 'limp mode'. Since then (I don't think it was there before) I have noticed a whirring noise like a distant siren when i rev the car, not really loud but loud enough to notice it, I also noticed I am losing some oil, I have looked under the engine + it looks as though the oil may be coming from the turbo area.

Has any one come accross these issues or know how to correct this problems - is my turbo on its way out or gone already? If so is having the turbo reconditioned ok or not recommended? Would be cheaper than having a brand new one fitted.

Also any one with the same vehicle, what MPG do you get? mine is lower than I thought it would be - seem to average about 40MPG and thats driving steady.

Thanks in advance,

JIO22.

Could be a pressure (boost) pipe that has popped off.

Turbo whine is common, as is oil leakage from a pipe breaking at the joint. Unfortunately the louder the whine the more chance the problem could be serious !

Take it to a specialist to get a diagnostic fault scan before anything else.

I've just had a recon turbo fitted for £725. 2 year warranty.

I have averaged 46 mpg over the last year just around town with a couple of longish motorway trips. At 75 on Mway average about 52-55.

Yes i agree that takes the worry out of my turbo going pop .Its always good to know there around for a decent price ..

Thanks for your responses chaps.

I have had a diagnostic check since I noticed the leak, there were no faults/errors found. I thought there may of been something about the 'limp mode' in there.

I was hoping it may just be a pipe, it is quite awkward to see the whole of the turbo from underneath + to view it from the top you need to start taking various things off. A friend of mine has got one of those camera's, we used this to try and view up by and all around the turbo, all the pipes looked good, it looked like the darkening (oil deposits) were on the top of the turbo where i 'think' there is some sort of join, was quite difficult to see properly though. This is why i'm thinking shall I just take it to a garage and instruct them to remove it, and sort a new/reconditioned turbo out especially with the 'whirring' noise too.

Mike, the 46MPG was that on the DIS? Mine usually reads about 45-48 MPG on the DIS, it was only when I worked it out with a calculator on fuel used + mileage done etc, that it was actually lower, typiically about 40MPG. Not overly impressed with this considering it is driven pretty steady, I have only had the car about 6 months.

Thanks again, and any more information would be appreciated.

Cheers, JIO22.

Yes that was on the DIS but I usually get 450 miles to £60 diesel at £1.30 per litre.

I think that works out at just over 44 mpg !

Anyone with any ideas/recommendations on what is the best type of turbo to get + where from, reconditoned or new?

Thanks in advance.

BUMP.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
