My A3 - replace or sit tight?

I've had my A3 for nearly 2 years and, to be honest, I'm getting the usual itchy feet again (longest I've kept a car is 2 years). It's a really lovely spec and only has 20k miles on the clock at 4.5 years though, so there's good reason to stick with it.

I've got the value of my A3 plus about Ł10k to spare. I'm looking for a medium-sized high class hot hatchback, with 4WD. For all sorts of reasons, the only two cars on my list are now a Mk5 Golf R32 or an S3 Sportback.

I don't think my budget will stretch to an S3 Sportback just yet. Besides, it would be hard to find one in the spec I want (roof bars, Bose, auto lights at a minimum) and it's a lot more to pay for a very similar car. The R32 seems really up my street and I could just about live with the running costs, since I only do 6-7,000 miles per year - although the boot is smaller than the A3 quattro and it's pumps out some serious Co2 (257g/km).

The most logical and cheapest thing to do is keep my A3 - but I'm not sure!

    hi mate,
simple this one for me anyways. sit tight until the a3 sportback comes into your financial grasp. a 3.2 n/a v6 vs a 2.0t is a no contest for me... i like the pull of a turbo :-)

I'd sit tight with the A3 and save to get an S3 Sportback.

Thanks guys - you're all singing the same tune LOL!

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to keep it and think about saving for an S3 and some mods in the meantime!

I wanted a R32 when I was buying and am glad I went for my A3 as it gave me cheaper running costs with 4WD. R32 running costs are high, not only in fuel but road tax too.

As said above, I would wait for an S3 Sportback. I think I would like one next too!!

Not quite true tbh, pre 06 cars are Ł240 a year to tax and mpg is close enough to a 2.0T to not make a difference.
The main draw of the 3.2 to me apart from the driving characteristics is the Quattro and DSG together, that would cost at least Ł10k and probably more like Ł15k with a comparable spec to get into an S3 sportback.
Maybe I could well see myself in an S3 sportback in the future but I don't see it as that much of a step up apart from the age

The R32 wont feel faster than your remapped 20T, probably because it isnt. It will sound nicer though. Its not really a great looking thing neither IMO, the Gti looks nicer.
Either stick with your car, get a 3dr s3, save for a SB s3 or go non VAG!

    good luck

Hmm not sure I agree with Paul re: GTI vs. 3.2

anyhow, the A3 3.2 is always a proposition? Depending on how fussy you are about miles there are some very nice cars out there with slightly higher miles

And you could always do a Phil to the front end

Okay the tax on pre March 23rd 2006 reg cars are the old band road tax but as the OP already has a late 06 car I assumed he would be getting something newer....

Don't agree on the MPG either... My 2.0T will do nearly 40mpg on a run, R32 would be low 30's at best.

the 06 tax issue is only temporary anyway and runs out this year so even if you do get an R32 pre 2006 then you will get stung next year anyhow!

Mine will do 35/36 mpg on the motorway so not far off, long term average is 23 and I do nearly all my driving around town.
I do see your point about the road tax though as most if not all R32's would be in the higher tax band.
It's just everybody automatically thinks a 3.2 is an expensive car to run, when it's actually not bad at all. My old Leon Cupra R could not live with those figures!

Wait for the S3 SB you really want as this can with a simple Ł500 map turn it into a devil car, I wouldnt waste my money on a 3.2 now tbh, restrictive I'd say & you may get bored.

    Shut up Nige lol

The 3.2 is a good car and not as expensive to run as some fear. But I would keep what you have, looks a good spec and low miles, why give someone else a bargain!

I'd keep what you have mate, was thinking same a few weeks back. Also wanted an SB S3, thought about 3.2 and 2.0TFSI quattro (auto) but new model is around the corner (18 months away). Or you could just do the 2009 facelift to your like I am
