Hi
My friend just completed a conversion to the new 2010(inc drl leds headlights) front end on his 56plate a3.
I have also done 1 using oem ballasts and bulbs but he has used h7 and xenon hid ballasts.

My car is fine but his alternator has gone and so has the new one, also when he starts his car in a morning it makes a crackling noise near the engine on the drivers side behind the headlight.

He has made a video with the noise you will hear the diesel engine and there is also the crackling noise

here is the link
YouTube - VID 00001 20110120 1557

dont know if this is due to the conversion and him using aftermarket HID ballasts and bulbs, electrition bypassing something on ecu, wrong connection on light control module or something unrelated to the conversion

thanks for any help

I cant tell from the noise but xenon + cracking/sparking = potential fire!

I'd be very careful as there are very high voltages from the ballast.

same here dont know what that is but be carefull as there is something like 30.000v going through the ballasts

put the clutch in and see if it still makes it. sounds like the flywheel to me. or release bearing.
