    After some serious help really...

My dad has an A3 aswell. His is a 2.0 TDi sport, 69000 miles on a 53 Plate.

Started using coolant like mad the last few days and smoking heavily on startup and for a good few minutes after whilst under any load.

Its been at the garage today and they say they've put die in the coolant and cant find any leaks in the coolant system.

The car still goes perfectly fine and doesnt feel slow or hesitant at all.

Theres no mayo in the oil and the smoke is only ever white. I know these engines, especially the earlier ones had issues with the heads being porous and/or twisting. Does this sound like the root of the problem?

The garage says they now dont know whats wrong with it, but guessing they'll suggest a new head which obviously won't be cheap. Does anyone have any reccomendations on what to do next, or whether getting the head pressure tested will be of much benefit? Is there any sort of warranty backup on this particular issue, despite the age of the car?

Failing that, any recomendations of decent Audi specialist garages in the Warwickshire area would be great.

Big thanks in advance for any help/knowledge you guys can share.

im not sure, but i think TDI's of this period suffer a lot from porous heads? but i could be wrong, sure someone else more in the know will be along in a few and offer some more advice

Sounds like the head has cracked. If the car is a 53 plate the head would be a A version which is known to be weak. The water doesn`t mix with the oil as the crack is in the head usually between the valves so the water gets sucked under pressure straight into the head. Pressure testing a head is about 50 plus labour to remove the head. There are several BKD heads on ebay at the moment or a new replacement head is about 800.
Below is a pic of one of my cracked heads.

    06 Audi 2.0 PD140 Sport TDI Quattro S-LINE.
Old engine 330 bhp @ flywheel 263 bhp @ wheel 490 lb torque. Audidriver write up HERE
Now stripped and playing with an uprated Cryo treated engine fitted with bigger turbo,water/methanol,uprated injectors etc etc.Wanting 400 bhp and 500 lb torque.

Other car 500+ bhp MK4 Golf R32 turbo.

It the head has not been changed already it could well be that. The (upside down) serial number on the top of the head is worth checking - if it ends in "A" (which I presume this one will do unless it has already been changed) then it is highly likely to crack at some point - check this thread out mate - [2.0 TDI] How to know if your cylinder head will Crack (if it hasnt yet)?

If the coolant is going through the head you should see your oil level rise as you lose coolant. I would say this is the easiest way to diagnose it. For a good specialist in the area, try T&H Motors in Leamington Spa - they are very good and their rates are competitive.

Why should the oil level rise? The water is leaking directly into the head and so has nothing to do with the oil. Any excess pressure gets pushed back through the crack not past the piston rings and into the sump. When a head cracks often the water will be pushed under pressure back through the water jacket and out through the over flow in the water reservoir tank.

When mine went that is what the garage asked me to monitor and I did indeed witness it first hand. No doubt about. Then got the head pressure tested and it was cracked over cylinder A.

It all depends on the path if the crack.
    Water jacket - combustion chamber
    Water jacket - oil galleries
    Oil jacket - combustion chamber
Water jacket - combustion chamber & oil galleries

    Depends on your luck !

Yeh pretty sure its the head.

Now i know this was a huge issue but Audi claim to have no record of it on there system, despite every audi service centre being aware of the issue.

The car does not have full Audi service history ( part ) but has FSH, is on 68K so fairly low milage for the year and was bought privately.

At the moment it looks like 1000 repair job at a specialist or 1000 + at Audi, is there any chanells to go through to seek some form of part payment by Audi? Surely with so many being at fault they must be helping out in some way.

Really appreciate the help guys, just want to get my dads car going for him again, he's got enough stress in his life as it is.
