Noisy Engine - S3

Hi,

Just joined the forum as I am looking to join the audi family very soon. I ve been looking to buy a used 08 S3 and I went to see one last week, everything is great except the engine seems to have this tapping noise which I thought its a bit loud for a petrol car. It almost sounds like a diesel if the bonnet is up.

The car seem to drive fine though.
Can anyone confirm if this is normal?

Totally normal mate, they sound like a bag of nails when idle

Yep that's normal. It's the direct injection system

Thanks for the quick response guys.

Is there anything else I should be looking out for? I also notice a loud mechanical sound under the floor whilst driving, but I take it thats normal given its 4wd, it sounds like the drive shaft or something.

I think I will see another just to compare anyway. I never owned an Audi before so this will be my 1st one.

The engine noise is normal, they sound worse than diesels.

Not sure about the mechanical noise, that sounds a bit iffy to me. Mine doesn't make any mechanical noise like that from the Haldex (4WD system). I do however have a knocking exhaust which has been in to Audi twice since Jan to have it tightened up, normally notice a knocking exhaust when you come off the gas to change gear.
