Anyone else bother with 'winter rims'?

    Hey all,

Given the dedication to their motors on this forum, I thought you guys might have a stronger opinion on this than anyone else I might come across.

Given my BE alloys are still pretty much mint, whats the consensus on getting another (likely not mint) set of rims for the winter months?

Also a bit of a feeler if there's anyone local ish who might have something suitable....(I'm in West Yorks).

    Cheers guys!

Thanks for the replies guys, wish I'd have seen the ebay link earlier (lost my ASN login ) If anyone's local with a decent set of rims they want rid of then please do drop me a PM - looking to spend a max of a couple of hundred quid.

I have to say i would never bother. Its a bit like those people that buy a new sofa and leave the wrapping on it to protect it... I knew a guy who brought a new Morris Marina many years ago and kept the seat covers on it for the 2 years he owned it.....he never did get the benifit of having new seats....the next owner did, whats that all about...lol
That and the bloody winter is 10 months of the year

    Agree.

Never change mine, just wash them when they get dirty.
Never noticed any significant deterioration during or after the winter season neither.
I want my 1st choice wheels on the car all of the time.
Although if you have mega expensive polished split rims etc I can kind of see the point.

    cheers

I was going to, Audi doing a deal about a grand for S3 ones, including dunlop winter tyres which are pretty decent, but only 17" which is sorta the correct thing for winter tyres, but tbh I just bought 4 hankook 225/40 R18 92V's for Ł430 inc Vat, but not fitted. it not cost a lot to get them swapped over twice a year.

Love the rims N8, they're sick. I'll have to keep my eyes out for some used/rep rims. I shouldda done like Lee and kept my old 8L for winter running. Just a sod it was so thirsty!

I know a dude that fights to keep the plaggy coating on his phones screen. It's a right mess now but he maintains it's protecting it still!

My thought re the rims is the increased chance of kerbing if sliding etc. Ideally I'd get a set of rims cheap that I actually want that need a refurb and wait until the nice weather to do it.

I've just taken mine off for that reason. A pothole cost me a new tyre having the 19's on, so I've stuck the 18's back on. I'd rather have more air between the road and the rim over winter !

If the slippery conditions are such an issue wouldn't winter tyres would be the answer? To be honest, if I'm going to go sideways in winter my wheels are the last thing I'll think of.

There is a very good article this month, week, in autoexpress regarding winter tyres, but winter tyres in my view make a massive difference to driving in ice and snow etc, and general winter conditions in very cold weather., just remember, you might stop quick, but the idiot that is always driving up ya ass cant stop on his ****ty tyres. I have just acquired some Hankooks W300's 225/40 R18 for Ł430-00 for 4, though cannot put them on yet, as I have no car still in Audi garage where it has been for the last 3 weeks

I'm putting my OEM 18's back on in December.

Had no real issues with 19's in the snow last winter other than on very tight turns. I thought there would be issues with off the line traction and tramlining on cambers, but they were remarkably good (albeit full tread on them 7mm). Only time I was caught out was on a pick up point outside the missus workplace (which is a cambered tear drop shape), and the car just didn't want to turn into the uphill camber.

Will be looking for some winter tyres for the OEM 18" fronts as the Michelin Pilot Sports are close to finished; rears still have about 5mm on them.

No dont change mine. Dont see the point. They have survived 3 winters fine.

The only thing I do is not drive it in the snow if I can help it. Dont trust someone not to crash in to me and from my experience last winter its pretty hopeless in the snow compared to previous cars.
