    A3 1.6... 5th Gear at 80mph...

Well, not important really, but its had me wondering. When driving along a motorway at 80mph..ish, the engine is at 4000RPM. Is it me, or is this a bit high for the engine to be revving at for hours on end?

Its a bit strange, because when I accelerate off and hit 4000RPM / 4500RPM, it feels like am ragging the thing, but the engine is sat at this for ages when Im on a motorway?

I know that the engine is probably designed for it, but I just dont want to see the pistons dancing on my bonnet!

    Thanks

dont be so paranoid lads they bench test engines an they rev them flat out glowing red hot for weeks on end. so a few hours is nothing to worry about providing your car is looked after and your oil and water levels are ok..

had my 1.6 MPI for 70k miles and 5 years. ragged the thing silly sometimes. it was always properly cared for, and the engine never had a problem aside from a crappy EGR valve giving it a bit of a misfire but this was a simple fix.

thats normal for that car, the gearing is quite low to make up for the lack of power/torque.

Mines got a bit of a stutter sometimes- especially from cold and on the overrun...
I've changed the plugs etc and it runs fine. Is the EGR valve a common fault?

    no idea tbh.

when my EGR valve went the misfire was TERRIBLE. in standing traffic it would rev high enough to pull the car forwards even with full force applied on the brakes. obv i pulled over immediately and called the AA. you can stop the EGR valve from working completely because it's not an essential part. you'll be driving around with your emissions light on, but if the problem goes then you know that's what it is. if it doesn't then you know to look elsewhere.

just how you'd go about doing this i'm not sure. best of luck anyways. hope you get the problem sorted.

To be fair I'm probably just being paranoid. It happens rarely and its only minor when it does but I always have need to lift the bonnet and 'fix' something when it makes any kind of noise etc.... The car runs great and there's no warning lights so I'm leaving it be.

Stupid question but what was it like going from the 1.6 to the 2.0 tfsi? I'm 22 and apart from having a go in a tuned-up RX-7 on trading estate I've never owned or driven anything faster than what I've got I'm looking to upgrade when insurance premiums come down for me next year?

i'd definitely recommend it. i loved my 1.6, and this is more of the same but faster. brilliant engine - any gear, any revs and it goes. i was thinking about it the other day tho, and in real world driving (the way i drive at least, riding the torque) a TDI 170 probably isn't any slower, and is probably faster in some situations. but it also gives you the benefit of 55mpg+. don't be fooled by the manufacturer's fuel economy figures - the 2.0T is a lot less economical,
particularly in town. i've lost around 60mi per tank, to give you an idea.

HOWEVER i'm not sure i'd recommend an A3 to anyone looking to buy a 2nd hand car for anything longer than a couple of years, and i wouldn't recommend a brand new car at all, because the Golf VI is a better car in my opinion, and the A3 is about to be replaced.

Yeah cheers guys, Im not too bothered, it just seems strange that when I hammer it off and accelerate in a hard way upto 4000 / 4500 RPM, it feels like im thrashing its nuts off! But then when im going down a motorway its permenantly revving like this. I know its fine, and probably designed for it, my mate had an old 1.6 Golf, he never looked after it, took it to nearly 6000RPM when cold every now and then, and that never blew up - he got rid of it at about 102k though!

Im kind of happy with the power my 1.6 gives. Id have got a quicker one, but got the car when I was 17, so the insurance companies didnt want me to have anything quicker! Its nippy enough, but as soon as Ive got a passenger on board, it feels like Ive lost most of its power!

Probably? The 170PS TDI would annihilate the 1.6 petrol.
