I think I'm going mad

What should I do?

Right here goes...

I've just traded my 2005/54 1.6 tip Sport for a 2006/55 2.0T DSG S-Line.

the 1.6 was effectively a gift/hand-me-down that my dad bought as a run around and never used, but he very kindly let me use it in p/x, and then lent me the rest of the money to pay for the 2.0T which i'm to pay back once i'm on my feet (i've just graduated from med school in August). I'm happy with the car, the power delivery etc. but the modding bug has hit me hard and now I have a long list of things I wanna do to my car including all the remappy type stuff and fitting RNS-E and optical parking, possibly changing the front end for a '09 with LED DRLs.

thing is, i've seen a newer 8P3 2.0T quattro with DSG in red with all the extras on it already, minus rear parking sensors. a bit of maths tells me that i'll be shelling out a couple of grand more for the red one if i was to chop in the 2.0T that i've just bought compared with keeping it and modding it the way i want. (the 8P3 has RNS-E and LEDs and things already anyway.) but it's newer, won't need any work (apart from parking sensors which is fairly minor) and has quattro so i can put big power into it without needing a new set of tyres every week.

originally i thought i'd struggle being able to pay my parents back for the money i borrowed off them, but with my new job i realise that i end up with a lot of money spare. (let me clarify that that's ABSOLUTELY NOT because new doctors are well paid - i make £10 an hour on my job, work over 48hr a week with over 1/3 of my hours being evenings and wknds and only have spare money because i have no time to spend what i make.)

the only other complication is that i want to go to dental school in a couple of years time because the field i want to specialise in requires both degrees. so in theory i should be saving a bit of cash for that too.

sooo do i:

1. stop being ungrateful and be happy with my lot;
2. get a loan, repay my parents immediately and get the new car;
3. mod the car i have including an '09 facelift front;
4. mod the car i have, but leave the '09 front and save some money for the next car/dentistry.

thing is if you can afford to do it, then go for it, once your back studyin for maxfax your gonna be short on cash so i reckon enjoy it while you can!!
 
lol i'll be a lot better off when i come out at the other end mate. private wisdom tooth extractions on an evening = £4k. for one night's work. i can't believe dentists get paid so much.

my x is a dentist and she was rollin in it, 1 year post VT she would earn more in 3-4 of days then i would in a month and thats just nhs, i so picked the wrong course haha
i can see why you want to switch and do dentistry, its a very well paid job!!
 
i can't stand dentistry. it's max fac i love. i'm only doing it for the degree. maxillofacial surgeons are actually paid less than dentists, so i'm not doing it for the money ;-). does kinda suck tho. my flatmate last year graduate from dentistry same time as i did from medicine. for this 4 month rotation i'm making more than he is, but over the year i earn less despite the fact i work more hours and do a more demanding job. plus he will leave at 4 on the dot, but if i've got a sick patient i can't leave. simple as that. and i'm not paid to stay. in fact it's illegal and i can be disciplined for it - you just can't win.

personally i dont know how u could do either of them haha, but then im not medically minded!
to start with i agre.. but once you climb the ranks a bit, which will take a few years, that should change? and as well, you will still get nhs pension if u saty with the nhs... where as with dentisty i can see that going private totally pretty soon, so they will miss out there massively!! ;)
 
my friend (who's a dental student), her own orthodontist owns 1/4 of a practice and has a private jet. when i bought our Merc for my dad to give to my mum as a 25th anniversary present someone else who was dealing with the same salesman as me was buying an SL63 AMG to complete the set (he already had a C63 AMG, E63 AMG, CLS63 AMG and CL63 AMG) and he only owned one practice. i don't think they miss out all that much lol
 
haha ortho is a different ball game!! that is just a license to print money! they are stupidly well paid!
its a real ****** to get into tho as its a case of who you know, not what you know, bit of an old boys club!
dont get me wrong i wouldnt complain getting a dentists wage for the hours they put in!

If you have the itch to change then definately do not embark on a journey of retro fits and modifications to the current car.
If you can afford the change now and fund further studies then thats the way forward IMO.
If not, sit tight, then change when you can.

the only thing is i've literally just got the 2.0T. i've had it about 2 months lol. maybe i'm just being fickle.
 
i'd keep your current car once you paid your parents back look at getting a facelift model. I'd only do the facelift conversion if i was planning on keeping the car for over 3years.
 
Why bother facelifting or has the idea of surgery gone to your head. Modding cars is costly and futile unless you plan to keep it a long time and even then not for everyone (including me!)

Save your money to buy a QUATTRO... the best ever Audi experience.:p

You thinking about doing Max Fax? Nice one...I thought about it but the 4.5 day week and 9-5pm Dentist lifestyle is too comfortable for me!

I would just keep your current car leave the 09 facelift, get a remap, intake, exhaust and some subtle exterior mods. Soon you will be able to afford a low mileage S3 .
 
Yeah but by then I'll be in dental school (touch wood). Aiming for King's 'cos it's one of the few unis that does a 3 year course, and I won't need a car in London. And after that I'll just be too old lol
 
bide your time. be happy with what you have, save your money for other things. given time and hard work you will not be buying the car you seek you will be buying better. this is what lve told my daughter who starts uni this saturday. whether she talks the advice is up to her.
 
If you trade up I think it'll cost quite a few K and only get you quattro. Nice but I'd recommend you do what I plan, save a bit for the next coupla years and then get an S3 or S5 Sportback.

I don't like spending money on anything that doesn't make the car faster or more comfortable to drive, so I certainly wouldn't spend money on a new front end.
 
put it this way, if i was to spend £4k on getting the front end tacked on, another £1k or so on wing mirrors and rear bumper, and another £1k on sat nav, BT and AMI then i've made up the difference but if i were to get the '09n car then it has all that done already, and has the added bonus of being a much newer car, with higher spec AND quattro. that's why i'm contemplating the change. it's a no hassle alternative. as a matter of courtesy i'll run the idea past my parents because as far as i'm concerned the car isn't mine until i've paid them back. they're likely to tell me to shut up
 
Seriously cars are BIG money burners. Your folks have been great to give you a good start, stick with the current car and do whatever you want when you have the income to do it. Don't get into debt now when you have a great car already...
 
hmm the polls don't seem to reflect the written answers.

i'm erring on the side of doing gentle mods ('09 rear bumper but not front and LEDs) but saving the big cash for education and for a Porsche when i graduate :D.

Pay your parents back 1st out of respect for them IHMO then see whats left to do things with, to now go flaunting a new car or upgrades etc would be fairly rude tbh parents or not, show the respect they deserve & make them feel good you appreciate what they've done for you & maybe a nice long weekend break for them as a thankyou, if they refuse then you have done the right thing in the 1st place then you can choose from there whats best.
 
oh i have plans for my parents, don't worry. i'm buying my dad a suit and my mum an LV bag, whether i get a car or not (they're not really holiday ppl). but i take your point and you're right.
 
As much as I would like to do all these mods for you & take your money, lol I would have far more respect for you or anyone as a person if you considered what they did for you 1st & pay them what is due, not my business just my morals conscience :)
 
well we have an agreement anyway. i start paying them monthly from my 3rd wage onwards. any mods would be paid with money left over. i have no intention of doing it any other way.
 
Good plan mate, nice to see someone not fleecing there parents.
 
Keep the car, do a few bits if you want to and see how the next year or so pans out. Seems a shame having this one and tying yourself down with more debt if you plan to go back to studies. What your parents have done for you is wonderful and extremely generous in giving you a helping hand!
 
indeed it is. i love my parents for everything they've done for me. my dad wanted to be a doc but life didn't deal him a very good hand and he's been working 7 days a week since he was 16 to give me all the things he never had at my age. he's 62 now and still going - simply astonishing. he's only got himself to thank for his big house and £80k Merc and i respect him immensely for it. if i end up half as successful as he is i'll die a happy man.

the debt isn't a massive issue to be honest. if you look at my overall wage i AM well paid (esp for someone just out of uni), i just have to work like an absolute dog for it. i've just worked 36hrs in the last 3 days and i'm back to my regular 8am to 5pm shift tomorrow with a 12hr on call on Thursday lol. i'm willing to do overtime to make it easier too, but i think you're right about seeing where i'm placed in a year or so. my wage might actually go down next year...

my real problem is that i'm ambitious. i like taking on challenges, so whether i tacked an '09 front onto this car or got a newer one i'd have to work for it. part of this so i have a project i can channel my remaining energy into, be it having to pay for a loan or for mods for this car.

TBH I'd do some mods now then & see what the next 6 months brings you, as things change quickly & not neccessarily in the way you'd like either, so be cautious with finances dont stretch yourself just yet, as you say just out of Uni.
 
ah but see then the question is what mods should i do? atm it's a choice between a Jetex, CAI and power pulley (which, because of exactly what i have planned is considered the "posing" mods), RNS-E 2010, BT and iPod (the "practicality" mods) or a remap (the "power" mod).

i reckon what i'll probably do is cut down on the mods i want to do and save for an A5 2.0T quattro S-tronic.
 
TBH I would do the remap & see what you think & do the tech mods now, others arent important to be done tbh, you'll get more fun & excitement out of remap & the toys, exhaust, CAI & power pulley are as you say just for **** swinging imho for majority of people with who havnt neccessarily matched the parts to a specific setup.
 
Remap, keep the car and save for the A5 later once this one is paid off. Better than getting into more debt until you are ready for it

yeah i know you have - but never said if you've actually had it fitted to your car or ever driven a car which has had one fitted. i've seen a review on the TTS build Fourtitude are doing which tells me that despite not improving peak power it gives the car more low down torque and a noticable improvement in driving characteristics. considering i don't spend my entire life at 7000rpm that's far more important to me.

you'll have to forgive me if i don't give much weight to your unreferenced assumption as to the merits or otherwise of fitting a power pulley
