I was happily minding my own business in the outside lane of the A3 when all of a sudden I got a loud grating / scraping noise from the engine. Lost all power, and the clutch pedal dropped to the floor. Pulled over and saw a nice trail of oil down the road ending up in a puddle under my car (2000 A3 TS Quattro) :crying:

The engine started but there was a horendus rattling sound..... too scared to fire it up again. Got the car recovered and its sitting on my drive. Not being the most techie person (I tried kicking the tyres but it's still not working) I have jacked it up and had a look and it looks like the drain plug from what I think is the bottom of gearbox is missing (this is where all the oil was pouring out of on the road) I fear the gearbox has blown and taken the clutch with it.

Can anyone suggest how best I work out whats gone pop / suggest somewhere good I can carry it to that that is not a million miles from Sutton in Surrey.

Any help much appreciated.

Gearbox is gone mate, sounds like the same problem I had with my S3 a few years back, a diff pin had let go and fired itself through the side of the gearbox, taking the clutch with it! What's the mileage on your car? Mine was low mileage, so the DM flywheel could be salvaged, if yours is gone, thats £750 for the clutch and flywheel alone!! Should be able to source a gearbox for £300-350, and labour should be around £250 from a gearbox specialist.

Notice the metal filings you can see at the bottom of gearbox where it mashed itself to death!

Here's the hole, and you can see some gears!
