    Strange things are happening

    Any one can shed a light on this
    When driving my A3 1.8T the temp is steady on 90 deg
    When I park the car with the engine switched off I pop to the shop for a couple of minites.
    I switch the ignition on and I see the temp gone to 110 deg
    Istart the engine rev it up a little the temp back to norm please advice.

    Could be the temp sender thats faulty....might be worth getting the car on VAGCOM to see if it brings up any faults.

    Is the temp sender that sits on a hose pipe next to the head?
    and do you know if there is any other temp sensors on the engine?

    Mine does the same. Replace both the temp sender and thermostat and it still does it.

    Had it checked out by a audi specialist garage who tested the speed/milometer and turns out the fuel and temperature gauges are 'sticking'. Basically they are giving you a higher false reading as it should go no higher than 90 at any point

    Thats not strictly true. What happens is that, once at 90 degrees, the gauge on the dash then doesn't respond until the water temp gets significantly higher. I.E the gauge will jump from 90 - 100 and not go in between.

    This is VAG's idea of making life easier and less worrying for the average driver. I would imagine the water temp in your engine may be running higher than 90 at all times, you just wouldn't know without logging water temp via VAG COM, or using the climate control trick thing.

    That is what you need to do, find out what temp it's running at generally. It may be that the water temp is at 97 for example and then when you turn it off, it heats up whilst stationary (which it will do) bringing it over the 100 mark and bringing the gauge up with it.

    The gauge sticking is a load of IMO - it's working fine normally, why would it just be 'sticking'? That smells of bull to me. If the gauge doesn't go any higher than 90, then why does it have '100' and a red area? Surely it would just stop at 90? LOL

    What i meant to say is that the gauge should not go over 90 IF all is running ok.

    I have always thought that anything over 90 degres on a temp gauge IS adnormal unless there is a known problem with overheating.

    I watched my clocks get tested by a technicain by the way so no, i'm not talking bullocks.

    Don't know what the technician used but plugged in some sort of test euipment which sets all your gauges / speedometers to 0 (or their lowest point) and then sends them a full cycle to the highest point and then back down to 0. So in affect all your readings will go from min to max and then back to min.

    The temp gauge on my A3 did NOT immediatly return to 0 on this test whereas ALL the other gauges did.

    God knows why it will still sit at 90 untill i turn off the engine then it starts to creep up between 90-100, very tempremental.

    Just my own experiences which sound like they may be of use to someone with similar problems.

    Did I say YOU were? No, I think not....

    Like I said, find out what temp the water is actually running at, that's a good starting point, and then work from there.

    well after checking the water temp using the climate control I found thet my water temp is runing at 105 deg some of the time and the rest at around 90-95.
    The engine temp using chanel 51 on climate control is steady at 75 deg after reaching norm temp.

    Know can someone tell me if this is norm or there is something wrong.

    The main dealer here in Cyprus had changed the water thermostat and the temp sender and the thermal switchon the rad and said can not find any thing wrong.
