Morning all, my 2002 S3 has done just over 55000 miles do I need to get the cambelt changed on it? Can anyone give me any info on approximate cost or where could be recommended in the East Lancashire area. Many thanks in advance.

J

cambelt should be done every 60k or 5 years whichever comes first, also change the water pump for a metal impeller one and the tensioners are one to do as well iirc

Thanks for the quick response. The car is 8 years old now so will get it sorted soon. Do Audi supply metal impeller water pumps or will I have to source one? Cost?

J

It has never been done!!!!!!!!!!! Bought the car 2 years ago with 47000 miles on the clock.

Get it done ASAP, find a VAG specialist to do the work, don't go to Audi as it is mostly labour and Audi charge £108+vat per hour, a good specalist will be £50 per hour

if you go to audi you have to insist on the water pump with metal impeller being done

Mate, go to a specialist, dont worry about the stamp in the book, if you go to a reputable Indy, they will be able to do a top job for you, I had mine done at 55k, cost me £280 i think, that was all in, with what Voorhees mentioned.

Oh and if I was you, just to be on the safe side, I would get it done sooner rather than later as well mate.

Hi
I had the cambelt , tensioner and waterpump changed last year , my S3 has done 56k now . I've heard stories about the plastic pump impellors cracking and slipping round the shaft.

The plastic ones are stupid !. Mine wen't on my last car , It had done 29k and it mean't i had to have the cambelt changed as there was no point in taking it off and not doing the belt ! ****** waste of time that was lol.

I had mine done for £330.
I had a plastic impeller installed as i wasnt aware of the problems involved at the time i had it replaced. I have read somewhere that they now make the impellers from a strengthened plastic. However i dont know how true this is and at the end of the day its still only plastic!
As stated already go for the metal one...... i wish i had known it before i got mine done!

Jabba will do cambelt etc + metal impeller for £350 not a bad price

Thanks for all the responses. Have rung Audi and they have quoted me £349 for belt and tensioners plus whatever it costs for the waterpump so he thought £400 all in. Then gave Audi Motorsport a ring in Great Harwood he said he could do it for £330. Going to get it done there next week during half term. Are the metal bladed impellors OEM?

Thanks J

did mine and went with the plastic oem pump, the first had done the job ok so replaced with same for peace of mind.

Think a lot get broken removing them as they are a snug fit,

haha years over due... nicely done there!

I rang Audi when I bought the car and they said it didn't nee doing until at least 80000 miles, they didn't mention the 5 year thing!!!

Cheers Audi. Booked in for next Thursday. Still SORN'd so will need to tax it aswell.

J

Where have you booked it in, have you gone to Audi or to a specialist??

They will say 80k as they just go by the book, but experience from lots of people clearly shows that it needs to be done ALOT sooner than that.
