    Largest Turbo

My boss has a load of garret turbos and he is willing to give me one for free as long as I fit it to my car. Just wondering what is the largest turbo I can fit to my S3. The biggest one is probably about the size of a football which I think will be too big.....could mount it on the bonnet though ......nah lol, I want it as OEM as possible so mounted where the K04 is. Also how much extra work is that from doing a K04 hybrid apart from DP, ex manifold, charge pipe n tip?

There are loads of turbo options mate... GT28xxr or GT30xxr are the best bets and read my build thread for an idea of the work involved...

In your position, I'd take the Garrett GT3071

Should point out though that as you want the OEM look then you would need to get a GT28 comp housing machined to fit a GT30 comp wheel as a GT30 comp housing won't fit underslung....

well, whats the part numbers on the available turbos?

Maybe then we can make a slightly more informed answer for you, unless you really want me to say use the one the size of a watermelon, but not as big as a football?

If you go top mount tubular exhaust mani then you can fit what you like but GT3071r with an 0.63 hotside will be as big as you need with good spool and plenty of flow...

Check out this big turbo thread on SCN for some more ideas... http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=218680

Going BT ain't gonna be cheap but if you are getting the turbo for nowt thats a start... just make sure its a bearing rather than journal and is water cooled as there are loads of different turbos out there and big doesn't mean better...

For going BT? dependant on too many factors to be specific... going BT properly requires some prerequisites to be in place... FMIC and rods bare minimum then you are looking at larger injectors, inline fuel pump, custom TIP, custom downpipe, charge system pipework mods, stage 3 mapping and suspension and brakes of course...

You can save a load doing the bulk of the work yourself but most BT conversions require a certain amount of fabrication be it something as obvious as the DP or unexpected like water lines and removing material from the transfer box as the turbo hit it...

Depending on the choice of turbo (and tbh should be done anyway) you would be looking at valves and springs for the head... this will get over one of the inherent weakness of 1.8t engines... valves and rods being the 2 main ones before hitting really big power...

Depending on what you have fitted already (prerequisites) it could be anything from 4k to over 10k depending on what bits you use, how you get them and how much you do yourself... this can affect the cost quite a bit...

For example... I paid 500 for supertech valves and springs as I stumbled across someone selling some unused ones for a project that he didn't finish... they are currently best part of $1000 to buy + postage, import tax and VAT etc... it can be done a bit at a time, its how I have done it but until most of its done then reliability and getting the most power from the setup is a going to be an issue...

I have learnt by doing this to mine and I can see why this stuff costs so much to do but if you can do a lot of the work yourself then you will save...

an out of the box one wont fit undeslung and clear the transfer box from the manifolds i have seen.
dont go silly on a/r as it will not spool until high rpms which sux

the turbo is just one small component of doing this properly
