    Which Clutch - stage 1 remapped s3

    hi guys,
my clutch has just started to slightly slip on my s3, its only running 270-280bhp i was wondering what people suggested? i have been informed by my local specialist that an OE Luk clutch and flywheel will be fine but i just thought i'd ask some fellow s3 owners to see you opinions?

    regards
    rob

    As above.

On a separate note, highly doubt you are on 27/80bhp with a stage 1 map fella. So if the same specialist that mapped your car told you the above, I would take it with a pinch of salt.

Lol, calmy calmy mate. If you take yourself off the boil for a second or two!

If you have 27/80 bhp, I would suggest an uprated clutch would be a better idea than a standard OEM replacement, suitable for cars running 230-250 (which you will be running with a stage one map).

    Make more sense now?

well if you were more adult about it and explained your opinion properly instead of being a smart arse by trying to take the p*ss then we would have been fine!

like i said all i had to go on is the dyno print out i have from jabba motorsport...its not like im trying to BS about my cars performance

anyway back to the topic in hand - oe clutch seems the way to go

I asked you to make your power clear by mentioning the fact that the website for the company that provided the remap quote a much lesser figure. And further more you exploded off on a rant about not caring what I thought. How would you like me to react when you've asked for help and opinions?

Maybe instead of exploding on a forum you are new to, you could take a step back, assess the situation (where you are asking for help) and pipe down a little.

Yes, OEM clutch will be fine for your use. If you intend to tune further (stage2, hybrid turbo etc), you should look into a more suitable clutch setup. However, they have the drawback of making slow driving quite jerky due to being a harsher bite point etc.

    LOL hear hear!

I'll add; I wouldn't think that anyone would achieve 270/280 bhp from a single remap alone, without adding additional modifications such as FMIC, full exhaust system. This debate has been done to the death. As JD says most dyno's are a gamble. Think Badger has a good one though which came from Llandow, a place 15 miles away from where I live, was one of the better, more reliable figure producing dyno's.

As for the Clutch, most people go for Sachs clutches as replacements. Unless you wish to further modify your car stick with Sachs or OEM, just my own opinion. If you want more power then get something like a Stage 1 ECS clutch and flywheel kit. Not cheap but have heard good things about.

Jabba are a reputable company, JD was not slating them in anyway as far as I can see. Take from that what you will! Just relax....

Well as they say mate, people mirror and match. Put yourself in my seat; if someone came on asking for advice, but slated your response, regardless of their figures being wrong, how would you react?

Since I am sure you can be grown up about this, I suggest you take the advice from all the posts above.

GSF or Euro car parts would be your best be to buy the components, not sure if faced with the same decision i would more than likely either buy Sachs or the ECS stage 1 and be done with it. Either way the new clutch will be brand new and improve the car, no matter what type it was as long as its not cheap and nasty.

Agreed. Personally only looking to stage 1 map my own car. Currently sitting on 70k I'm sure the clutch will be one thing I will need to replace and by all accounts, Sach will be the route I take.

After my APR remap I was almost certain that it would be slipping. It's done 100k now and still going strong. When it does die it will get an ECS stage 1 more than likely.

fair enough and im not disputing your opinion...just the way you put it

right end of...and back to the topic

yes i got a very good price from GSF for the luk stuff...i get trade there as i know a chap that works there, he never quoted me on sachs stuff though??

im not gonna go silly with the car, its quick enough for what it is, its got the remap as mentioned and also a induction kit, in the future i may pop on a cat back miltek but nothing else so im guessing a decent oe will do the job

Always nice to have someone like. Not what you know but who!

If you can, get him to quote on the Sachs ones fella, see what the prices are. Names are names at the end of the day, so you could very well be right in the "much of a muchness" comment between Sachs and Luk.

I'm using a OEM standard spec Valeo one on my Stage1 S3, I think it's more than upto the job of taming the power, and I use the car for the odd track session. Uprated clutch for Stage2 or above power and repeat launching if you like 1/4 mile runs, otherwise, for standard driving with the odd thrash here and there, standard clutch is upto the job methinks.

Clutches.... always provoke a bit of a debate

Not even sure there is a definitive answer to what appears to be the holy grail question... I for one do not know exactly what to go for but whatever you end up launching an S3 will pretty much kill it eventually...

I personally will be looking to use a dual mass flywheel, OEM (type) cover and a suitable friction plate thats uprated from OEM on mine... the OEM I am running at the moment is still fine but I think I may have done one launch too many the other night lol....

Clutch and flywheel is next on the list after I have fitted the large port head

what sort of prices are people paying for clutches ???

might fit one myself or might just get someone to do it as it would need 4 wheel alignment after and theres not many places around here that do that well

I paid 965 for OEM clutch and release bearing and then 40 for alignment . This was at a local garage , the Vag specialist in Leeds wanted 1400 ish. Im mapped and its been fine so far, although Ive only done about 2,000 mile since.

when i 1st got my s3 the clutch started to go after a month or so, i then had it replaced for an oem clutch and due to my driving style (sideways everywhere) i slaughtered that clutch pretty quick to. i then had a performance clutch fitted and its been great for over 2 years, so great stuff not sure what make it is as my history is at home but if you havent made ya mind up by the weekend ill gladly let you know. i had it fitted at AMD in thurrock!!! the only downside is that i live in london and its really heavy on the left leg

prices i had for the LUK one is 190 for the flywheel and 85 for the clutch...gonna be fitting it myself

like i said i got mine well below retail price :D

wierd thing is i tried to get the clutch to slip today by giving it full boost and the bloody thing didnt slip at all...i pushed every gear?!! im stumped usually a slipping clutch will just get worse??

is there any possibility i glazed the clutch over which caused it to slip and now it has sorted itself?? i recently par took in a autotest(lots of low gear accelaration reverse to 1st and 2nd) that obviously put alot of stress through the clutch and drive train

im at a bit of a loss?? i wasnt gonna change it till next saturday so maybe i should keep testing it and see if it slips anymore in the mean time

    any help appreciated

I think this is possible, I swear my clutch was starting to slip at one point, and I drive like a granny 905 of the time, but my mate had a testdrive in it and gave it some beans, and the clutch slip disappeared!

Rob, I had my car remapped at Jabba 20k miles ago and it's been good as gold, as long you don't launch every where or ride the clutch on quick get aways I think the standard clutch would be fine.
