Hello all

Some of you may already know that i recently took the plunge and sold my golf to move into a 1.8t A3.

First impressions of the car are great but there are a few things that had to be done to get it perfect.

The car came with a 3 months warranty from the garage i bought it from so naturally i took it into the approved VAG specialist to get it scanned and booked it in for a cambelt change as i wasn't sure this had been done.

Just small issue like the hazard relay switch etc

One of the issues with the car was that the temperature gauge was giving me some strange readings so the thermostat and sender sensor were changed.
Drove the car to work this morning (25mins of motorway speeds) and the temperature gauge showed 90 the whole way.. Very nice. However upon parking up and waiting in my car for a few mins i switched back on the ignition but the temperature was showing above 90, maybe like 95-100 Is this normal? i understand as the engine is off there would be less cooling but i don't know if i've ever seen a gauge go over 90 on a car like this ?

Suppose to be getting the car mapped tomorrow but i'm afraid i'm a little paranoid! Engine managment light is on. Car's going in for a VAGCOM tomorrow before the remap but parts will take a while to be delivered and fitted to the car.

Also i'm not sure why but when i got in my car this morning i drove down my hill and the coolant symbol came up on the DIS? only the icon in orange at the top of the screen so the red symbol did not accompany it. very strange as coolant level is more than sufficient. It flashed up and quickly dissapeared and didn't show on the rest of my journey.

Thanks

my guess is the coolant tank which you can source from stoke audi for £14, as just bought one to replace our scruffy one (these have a level sensor inside and is often a problem) ;)

also im thinking that you may have a fan issue, just check the lil fuse box on top of the battery and make sure all the solid fuses are true

this is where i would start

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been looking forward to getting the remap done but now i'm very hesitant. The car is running absolutley fine but there's clearly a few things not quite right. Think i'll call up the company later to inform them i will not go ahead with the map tomorrow :crying:

So, the temperature needle behaviour is not normal? it came back down to 90 after a few seconds after i switched the engine ON..

Little update on how this is going. Had the car on VAG COM and we had a few errors.

Dump valve appears to be on it's last legs and the pipe feeding it is split (patched up for the mean time) so this should explain the engine management light. Perhaps the dump valve is OK but the split pipe may be leading VAG COM to flash up dump valve errors?

As for the temperature gauge, the technician tested the dashboard dials and apparently they are 'sticking' so i'm getting a new one installed. New coolant tank as well as the sensor seems to be knackered.
Thankfully this is all covered under warranty..

I'll get some photos up once it's had a little TLC and see what you boys think!

Sticking? WTF? It shouldn't get up to 95 - 100 in the first place. I was always led to believe that the gauge will not show temps over 90 unless significant. It just sits at 90 unless there is a big rise in temp so not to worry the driver - then will jump up to 100ish if there is a temp issue.

Anyway, if it's been tested and being done under warranty, who cares? LOL. Hope it sorts it. :icon_thumright:

sticking needles...never heard of that prob before on these...id get a second opinion, lots of garages coming up with phantom problems these days :/
