USed to have a 2001 Type R but got smoked by a mapped S3 and then always wanted one of those...In between though i had an E46 M3 and i'd have to say it was a far better car than the CTR in every way. It took more skill to get the most out of which is why some people find they can keep up...The driver makes a big difference. My friend had a mapped S3 when i had the M3 and it was faster than i thought but was still easily out gunned by the M3.

Now my friend has a new shape type R (he had the old shape before). The newer is definately slower (heavier) but alot nicer to be in and does actually feel more stable handling. The S3 kills it in a straight line but in the corners it simply holds higher speeds which the standard S3 can't match!

His cousin had an Integra DC5 and on the way to the Nurburgring in my M3 i couldn't go round bends as fast as him...Though i was on crappy Falken tyres. The PS2's were far better!

I've had lots of experience with Type R's, S3's and M3's!!! The M3 is the one i'd own again out of them all. Apart from the traction on bumpy or wet roads, the M3 is a far better drive! I keep my eyes on them in Auto Trader. I fancy one with a supercharger conversion!!

i had a play with a Y reg, twin piped TT lastnight (so 210 or 225 bhp)

the golf had a field day with him. i then backed off and left him when he did some suicidally late braking for a roundabout

did wish i had the S4 though

Talking on m3's I was entering a dual carigeway off a roundabout the other day, I was following a p plate bmw, it didn't look anything special and was toatlly de badged! I assummed that as we entered the dual carigeway I'd easily pass him! How wrong was I, both floored it, and I could keep up but I wasn't any quicker!! Any speculation as to what this bmw was? It didn't llook special so I'm thinking not m3? The funny thing was while we were keeping up with eachother this 911 turbo flew up behind me, we both pulled into slow lane! Made us look like a right pair of prats as he flew by!

id have to guess 325 or 328. M3s are genuinely fast, ie i wouldnt have high hopes if i came across one in the S4.

proper cars like 911 turbos are a giggle though when you get to see them shoot off like a stabbed rat.

only the other week i came across a GTR whilst out in the golf. he must have seen my jaw drop when i went past him on a roundabout. he was following me, pretty close. we got onto a dual carriageway, the golf legged it for all its worth to get past two cars in the first lane and to get out of the way of the GTR to see if he opened it up

the golf was into its normal stride but the GTR legged it as if i had hit the brakes... it was unreal. i bet he barely tickled the throttle either

    I think I need to follow your guys suggestions on what to put the S3 against, as so far my "ohhh, Turbos are fun" thought process has lead me to fail massively;

FQ360 - lost, badly and he was barely trying (know the guy, lives close by).

I don't tend to "race" but I do like to put my foot down every so often

its a natural thing, just dont become one of the crowd where you take silly risks like relying on ya brakes too heavily and cornering like ya on a track..... i have always maintained that if im doing any of the above then the risks increase significantly - so far its paid off

I have a nice private race track near me Tim, but always take it easy. Still not use to the power or the way it handles.

I'm use to no power on the straights but no movement through the corners. So the S3 feels like a boat - a rocket boat however!

I'm sure there are a few out there, but don't you find it's usually smaller lesser powered cars that act like retards? I know that is quite a sweeping statement, but just reminds me of driving up the bypass near me and the amount of weaving Clios, Corsas and Saxos is unreal!

    Yup.
Had a B7 RS4 up my arse all the way from my house in to town last weekend (5 miles). I had the missus in the car and car was cold, so I just took it easy (not that I would've had a shot at him!). RS4 driver clearly didn't want me there in front of him, ruining his 'Sunday blast'.
So, dropped the missus off in town, turned the car around... oh look who's in front of me, the very same B7 RS4 - could tell at this point that he was out testing his new Miltek. He must've seen me in his mirrors and thought he'd teach me a lesson.
Next set of lights go green - we both floor it (me only briefly!) but he keeps his foot down and within no time is doing about 80 in a residential 30 zone, on Easter Sunday with kids running about on the pavement...
Next lights - I just sit back and watch as he flies up the road at 2-3 times the speed limit and disappears down a side street 200 yards ahead of me.
What a prick, I said to myself. There's plenty of country roads and dual carriageways around the area, why test your performance car on the 30mph streets your own little suburb? The only answers I could come up with were...
    a) he wants everyone to see/hear his car &
    b) potholes!

Had a little shot at a Corsa VRX and a RenaultSport Clio on the way home from work lastnight (proper country lanes) but neither were really biting.

well im from essex, the boy racer capital of the universe. on any saturday night you like, youll be able to go out and find racing here and there.

last time we were out (3-4 weeks ago) 4 mitsubishi lancer evos turned up driving like absolute spastics. they all had pretty serious power (ie exiting tight right handers and laying down black lines once in a straight line...) but they had absolutely no clue what they were doing

a 360bhp evo managed to lose a race against a 20vt corrado (fwd 230bhp) because he couldnt launch for toffee and coulndnt do gear changes in a hurry either. the next thing they were doing was racing through an unlit industial estate flat out, barely keeping it on the road, taking blind corners on the wrong side of the road, driving like suicidal tits. everyone just got into their cars and left becuase something bad was blatently about to happen.

its the window licker crowd like that that has the rest of us tagged as hooligans

i think you have roughly the same attitude as me. on a country road through the middle of nowhere, its pretty much fair game. if the worst happens, youll come off the road and land in a field, but no one else will be involved.

there is no excuse for hooning anywhere residential, especially not during daylight with other people around. it does prove anything and just add fuel to the fire for the anti car lobby.

    Totally agree with you, Matt.

What is genuinely sad is that three years ago (in my Cliosport prime so to speak) a good few of us would meet up and chatter, take a few photos then pop down the road for some food. We would occasionally go for a blat about the country lanes of the NW as well, but usually in a calm manner (windows down in summer enjoying the noise and the looks from people when 10 Clios go passed).

However, the most recent (and so far last) event I went to in Manchester turned out to be a disaster. Chavs who have clearly been able to now afford these little hot hatches racing each other in motorway service stations of all places!

Police called, told to leave by security in car parks and, more worryingly, accidents have become common at meets!

one thing thats good about the golf scene is that "chav" generally doesnt exist. at one of our meets the cars all look standard (apart from when my S4 had the chav knock off RS4 fakes)... if you want a good LOL haev a look on the corsa vxr sites for maximum cringe

there was a big row on there last year (someone sent me a link) where some guy posted a video taken by his mate of him exiting a roundabout flat out past the camera and school. probably doing 80 or so, in the middle of the day haha

I agree with a lot of the statements on here I think real car enthusiasts are good drivers, rarely do I put my foot down, and only where it is safe. Unfortunatley there are people that give drivers bad names and in my experience I know a few people in the citroen, vauxhall, renault brigade who drive it like they stole it everywhere! Seriously dangerous! These guys are not real enthusiasts, for example they heard vxrs and renault sports are quick and bought based on this. Makes it worse for the rest of us when it comes to insurance, police etc. We become the targets because of the minority!

yup i gotta admit im guilty of that too especially as i need my rear bumper repairing and painting

then if they bite and try to overtake, floor it and cover the ground between you and the car in front - as long as it aint a 911 you'll be fine

This is the type R I was talking about, it will give most s3 run for its money, I only know one A3(KO4) who has beaten him, and thats top end, by car length.
its not turbo or supercharged. just good tuning.

It takes a lot of extra power to make a difference. Had a play with my friends clio 172 cup and there really wasnt as much in it as I had hoped, the S3 feels a lot faster inside but I guess thats just the way the turbo delivers the power. Hmmm maybe a hybrid is in order

Yeah thos celica are ain't got no pulling power!
Rx8 are the same no torque and you really have to keep the revs up all the time and in actural fact they come under the 2.5 litre engine
even tho it says 1.3 ****le engine more like w•••••s engine lol

Yeah have to agree the RX8 was a gutless peice of **** with the thirst of a v8. A corsa would give it a run for its money. As for the celica, a t sport version would give the S3 a run for its money, don't believe the times toyota quoted, they were lying

Surprised at that, Chris, should have had an easy pull on a 17/82 or a 197. Maybe closer with a 200.

We did two runs, one of the line which I easily won due to traction but the rolling one was surprising, it wasn't the longest run in the world. Got to remember that clio only weighs 1020kg and with the exhaust its close to 180bhp so the power to weight ratio is very similar.

As for the t sport, yeah its the 190bhp version with the 8200rpm redline, the lump they put in the exige. Toyota even made a compressor version they put in the corolla which isnt slow to say the least

The clio 172/182 will be similar to a Type R, they need to be thrashed, they will lose out top end but with the right driver and on the twistys or a track they can run rings round other performance cars. My friend did several track days in his 172 cup and was out doing M3's and Type R's.

As for idiot drivers, I hate it when people wont obey the speed limit in residential areas, especially if they over take you but get no further, whats the point. I've probably pissed a few people of by flooring it when they try to over take, normally as you approach a national limit sign on the outskirts of the village I grew up in (which is a nice straight road), childish I know. I once over took a chaved up astra on the straight into the village, pulled away from him then slowed and maintained 30 from the start of the 30, the astra was then right up my arse so I just slowed right down to really piss him off. Childish again I know but at least this prick wasnt going to speed through the village while I was in front.

Sounds exactly the sort of this I do, and if they do tear past they always flick a shed load of gravel up at your car. No one likes that noise

Totally agree in cornering abilities for the Clios. One of the best hot hatch chassis out there. Would just have thought that they tend to run out of puff.

I was pulling, just expected more. Only just got up to 90 though. Lucky enough that there is an old WW2 runway not to far away
