Morning boy's and girl's.

Right the s3 has always been a bit slow to start in the cold lately but always started then for the first time last week it wouldnt start, well it did but then it died, it started, rev's were just rising and it went, tried again and bang, it started, the same thing has just happened again this morning.

Now the car runs fine although it is down on power a bit but that's due to the MAF been on its last leg's i believe.

Had a little look on here and i think it could be the battery but could it also be the MAF?

I am still experiencing poor cold starts where my revs drop and the car coughs and splutters then the revs stabalise. I've been starting the car with a little bit of throttle to combat this problem. I replaced the temp sender and cleaned the TB but to no avail. I started the car without the MAF plugged in and it was slightly better but my MAF is showing normal readings in VAGCOM so i'm stumped!

Have you tried starting with the MAF unplugged?

Hi, does the car turn over at the normal rate? if so then batt is fine! if not then i think a combination of the battery and MAF!
Also came across a car with worn injectors too that had exact same problems! maybe just dirty injectors?? but it wasnt an Audi!

Have you both changed fuel filters? May be a good old fashioned fuelling issue rather than something electrical?

I grant you, proper 'mechanical' faults are unusual.

Seem like, for you at least Dan, lack of fuel on start. Shame you can't test the fuel pump easily.

**** plop. Hmmmmmm. We dicussed this before as I recall - to do with the N249 removal? I take it you reassembled the N249 system?

Nah I dug it all out the garage and realised I'd hacked the ***** out of one of the hoses taking it of and couldn't be bothered to fix it.

I'm now hoping that my new oil catch tank and vac hoses will possibly sort out the issue!

Yup new fuel filter westle.

Tbh i think it may be the battery.

the car will crank and crank, but there will not be a spark

Red arrow is the hole for the ESS/crank sensor the yellow arrow is the hole for the oil cooler and the green arrow is the holes for the oil filter housing

I had the crank sensor pack in on my AGU engine (well, my other AGU engine) and believe me, starting it wasn't the problem. Keeping it going was the problem. Would drive OK for a few mins, then just cut out and completely refuse to start AT ALL for several mins.

You would experience far worse problems that difficulty on cold start if this was the issue.

So what was the problem??

Well im 99.9% sure it's the battery.

Got home tonight and popped the hood, looked at the battery and at the front there's a clear circle indicator and im 99% its always a nice green colour, tonight it was clear, nothing there so im pretty sure its the battery lol.

Just hope it holds out until saturday :(

I'd get a new MAF on there. EXACTLY the same problem, solved instantly. Apparantly they don't always throw a code on VAGCOM according to the specialist that does my car. Managed to diagnose it in 5 seconds flat...

Right problem solved.

Was the battery, it was shot. Replaced with a new heavy duty bosch one and wow. The car just feels so much smoother, pulls better and doesnt feel held back now.

Cant believe how much difference its actualy made :).

Got a link to the battery, might need one.....

The battery has one main purpose which is to crank and start the car. If your car wasn't pulling smoothly and was holding back then that would be something else bud. It's the alternator what feeds all the little gadgets with the power they need, not the battery, if your alternator is failing then your battery won't be getting the full charge it needs.
Did you get your alternator checked too?

I know sandip but thats the weird thing, that was the only thing done to the car today, who knows, but the car definately drives better.

No finesse, just went to local trade place, £68 though, is a heacy duty bosch one though.

Im not sure the battery will hae been the problem...
Maybe the removal of the battery completely has reset the ecu thus clearing the faults that were responsable?
Only time will tell mate. Hope it doesnt come back.

Well that could be paul, the car is better for it.

Glad to hear you've got it sorted. FYI a faulty crank sensor will stop fuel and spark occuring thus the no start.
