Hi

Just found out you can get a VAG COM cable for £10 to £20 but will this only work with the £200 software?

the lead has a built in gizmo that knows its the real deal and you get to use all the functions

You pay for the actual cable, which acts like a activation key to unlock full functionality of the current version of VCDS. The 10 pound cable on ebay will not activate the current version (I don't think it will even work with it), but it will give you a limited version of the older software.

I went through two cheap cables, which broke very quickly, before getting the proper ross-tech one, which is now over two years old and never skipped a beat. You gets what you pays for...
