    Whining turbo and White smoke

    Oh dear

Turbo just started to whine when off boost and spooling up and have also noticed some (ok, a lot) of White smoke out of the exhaust.
Also see a bit of oil in the pipes by the DV

    Obvious questions
    Seals or new turbo?
    Cheapest solution?
How long does it take to swap a K03? DIY?

    Cheers
    Jason

Are u sure its white smoke and not blue? Is it smoking the whole time or just on boost?

White smoke is water, blue smoke is oil, black smoke is fuel.

Best bet would be to make sure its def the turbo then get a specialist to inspect it. I'm sure having yours reconditioned is only about Ł250 so prob not worth messing about

Definately oil as the smell is intense and I've gone through 3 litres just to top up

    Water levels fine
    Turbo has now stopped completely

Anyone looking for a quattro BT project car?
Silver 1.8TQS 130k, leather, with a poorly engine may appear on eBay shortly.

With the noise symptoms and with the turbo now stopped producing boost, i would say its more than a seals issue, it sounds like bearings and prob from oil starvation. I'd be considering a new turbo if i were you

Take the part no from the alloy compression housing, its usually about a 1 inch square blue coloured plate on top! number is on there, then phone some turbo centres up and ask for a new "core unit!" when you take the turbo off, take the top alloy cover off noting wich way it goes back on in corrispondance with the oil inlet! then take the bottom cast iron section off, also noting wich way it goes back on! you will then be left with the centre main Core unit! it will have 2 wheels on it! 1 alloy, 1 metal! this is the centre housing where the bearings and shaft are! just replace the whole core with new refit and make sure you prime it with oil before starting the engine! will smoke for a short while untill the oil in the exhaust side has burnt off! much cheaper than selling car! if you need any help with this PM me!

To be honest I wouldn't mess about with all the above ^^^ thats all well and good if its just a freshen up or recon but this has failed, you'll be wanting to find out why is has failed or or whether it was just wear and tear, i'd also want it inspected for cracks around the wastegate etc as it would have clearly suffered at the hands of increased heat build up due to the poss oil/bearing issue.

My advice is that unless you are sure then just take it to someone or somewhere that knows - or if you do fancy taking a punt just go to a breakers or try ebay

If he replaces the core unit, wich is 95% of the working s in a turbo then he will have all new bearings, seals, o rings ,turbine shaft, comp wheel, and new bearing housing! the cast exhaust side and alloy top cover(compression cover) dont ware much! you will usually always have some light cracking inside turbine housing! it normal! very heavy cracks appear from turbos that have been remapped so run hotter! as for cause? could be alot of things, most common is called "Hot shutdown" not letting turbo cool enough before turning engine off!
Good to look on Ebay though as may find a recon one or a warrentied one? but sellin car is a bit extreme!
    Good luck anyway! Lee

    For Ł300 I could get a K03s
I saw one from a golf go for Ł100 last night. This is the sort of money I want to spend.

If it's more than Ł500 all in then I may as well sell the car as is.
It would be an ideal car for someone intent on a big turbo conversion with the 4wd.

Be careful getting turbo's off ebay as you never know what condition it'll be in. Mate of mine bought one and it turned out to be really crap. Make sure you get somebody to look at it as other things may have caused oil starvation etc.. Good luck!

I was going to sell the car next month anyway...

Is it easier to replace the core unit?
Can it be done on the 'side of the road' with a pretty comprehensive halfords socket set?
I know it is tucked behind the engine and a bit of a pig to get to. Also working from underneath on a ramp doesn't help much as the transfer box is in the way.

Are the bolts going to need a little oxy-acetylene 'persuasion' to loosen? I haven't got that sort of kit.

    Cheers
    Jas

Hi Jas, i personally prefere to change the whole unit! its a little easier! if your sellin anyway just buy a second hand unit! go to halfords or somewhere and buy some penertraiting oil spray and spray all over the cast iron bolts! if still tight then SHOCK EM loose by using a blunt chissel and hammer! dont whack too hard or may shear heads off, then its drillin and re tapping it! PAIN! remember to "Prime" the turbo before starting engine! unplug igniton via fuse or relay and turn engine over to pump oil into turbo!
Good luck! if you need any advice just PM me!
