S3 vs Scooby STI(and anything Japanese whilst we're at it:) )

Its not how you drive your car its how you sit in it.

I think Ive mastered it.

p.s they aint that quick :p

Hit the nail on the head.

Anyone who says the S3 is quick and handles well simply hasn't had experiance of cars that do do both.

S3 is too FWD orientated which to an inexperianced driver gives more confidence and allows you to get to the limits of its handling, however an inexperianced driver in a fulltime 4wd def won't be able to push it to its limits. There is no way in this world a std S3 would come close to an STi and even a modded S3 would get its **** handed to it on a plate

I have had loads of "fast" cars including 2 lotuses and an S3. I can get to the limits of the S3 and pretty close to the limits on the lotus but there is no way I will be getting the STI as close to the limits. It is an extremely dangerous car in the wrong hands and takes a good amount of experience to drive "fast" I have done lotus advanced driving courses and the STI still manages to scare me!

As someone stated above the STI is raw i even thought it felt quicker than my SC elise which did 0-60 around 4.3 seconds, the power delivery is crazy.

I've had some quick cars myself and the biggets moments i've ever had were in my escort cossie, but they handle **** anyway - the skyline makes an average driver good and makes a good driver exceptional, i've never had a car offer so much feedback, u can promote lift off oversteer, poweroversteer, scandinavian flick in the wet and even point to point grip when u need it. Yes its got active 4wd, active front, rear and centre diffs as well as 4ws but not for one minute does it take away the driving experiance

I dont get why people say Scoobys are cheap, they might be cheap to buy yes, but running costs are higher than the S3 Id say, the flat four drinks fuel, and insurance is probably higher to. As for staright line speed I would say a proper STI would leave the S3 with ease. A friend of mine had an import WRX (1996 model) and although we never put them up against each other it felt quicker and its power delivery was a lot more aggresive. I believe it was remapped too. But badges can be stuck on and not all Scoobys are super fast so you could have come up against a slower model. One thing that my mates scooby laked was top end, it ran out of puff around 100mph where as I find the S3 still pulls strong up to about 120, this could be down to the gear box on the subaru thou not being geared for top end.

The original impeza turbo's UK cars anyway only had 208 bhp! then after 1998 it went to 215bhp! these wernt nowt to shout about really as i have beaten them in a mates Rover lol, not in the bends mind! my impreza was remapped ect by the guys at prodrive to 314bhp on the rollers, but needs a new clutch every 4k! nothing to do with the way i drove it honest????:scared2:

You see, this is where I disagree. Yes the Impreza is quicker and will handle better. But my God does it give off the wrong impression. Every, EVERY Impreza I have seen in my area has a chavvy low life behind the wheel that appear to be of the opinion that double white lines mean overtake at high speed.

Now, this is all down to personal experience of course! But I wouldn't buy an Impreza if I had a gun to my head.

I wasnt a chavvy low life at all, bought it purely for the performance! although wouldnt have another as the image has overtaken my desire to have one again! i bought an S4 after that and much better car all round and as fast in a straight line! but didnt have silly Tw*ts in corsa's trying to race me from every set of lights!

Not even a P1 or even better a 22B?

Friend in the Lakes had a P1, and while I admire the car for what it is, no. I think both Scoobs and Evos are incredible cars, but I just wouldn't have one for anything other than track days.

this threads going round in circles!!!

I think those of us who have owned the Jap cars should just let the Audi boys get on with it!! . This is a Audi forum After all so no matter what ex scooby owners say, were going to be wrong or just cahvvy low lifes. Peace brothers, we all drive Audis too now!! (or should that be" peace bruv, we is cool init")

And i thought we were all car enthusiasts?

Must say iv never owned a jap car but have driven a few, like said the power they give is unmatchable. And an S3 is no compairson against a scoob. But If I wanted a quick car I would of bought an EVO RS, but i want a car id enjoy, nice interior, looks subtle and pleasure to drive and not exaclty slow. Fact: evo and subaru doesnt put across a bad image, but tbh most people out of the car scene also think skylines are chavvy.

And I know what you mean about the 335d's, they are absolutely nuts.

Im probably gonna be slammed for this...oops

But really, what the heck does it matter which car is faster? seriously if grown men still think 'my car is faster than yours' wins a fight or brings the bread home, sorry fellas its a touch sad, sorry no offence intended. It means nothing, there are so many variables anyway if your so inclined to race, I mean I could say I kept up with a Veyron but how do I know, without being in the car the Bugatti driver was even full throttle? ok, not a great example but it makes the point.

Its all about taste, and personally I want a good car which also has 'enough' power to make a drive exciting when I want it to be, I couldnt give a nats chuff if any of your lots cars are quicker, I really couldnt, I care about my family, career, my photography and my health, not how fast some strangers car is. The last time a fella tried luring me into a race, I pulled alongside and asked him if he fancied me, he asked why and I replied well your clearly showing off to me....but I like girls sorry. He went quite red and ******** off.

Maybe I am in the wrong forums thb, I avoided the usual 'meet and rev' type forums as I didnt want these kinda reads :(

I think Im a bit sqaure now...haha, cheers

i raced my cousin's bug eyed sti uk ppp 305bhp no end of times, my car was chipped and thats it, there was nothing in it what so ever
even on the twisty stuff
the scooby is a nice car if all you want is noise, backache, over size spoilers and gold wheels (yukk) lol
not my cup of tea id have another pulsar over a scooby any day ugly but much more fun imo

Martin, i couldnt agree more! Well put mate!:icon_thumright:

Scoobys are on Evo level which S3's are just not. Its all down to preference. If someone asked me which one, id pick an S3 because i love them (thats S3 rav's fault :p) im just not a fan of scoobys, but dont get me wrong they are fast and do handle well.. just not my cup of tea :) I think my fiesta will smoke them both.. yeah babyy all 75 horsies! hahaha. (thats a joke before everybody slaters me)

ok theres obviously something up here..... people who have owned them say they will spank an S3..... i and Gav have both had a play in a striaght line and disagree based on our experience, obviously theres the chap whos misus has one and he loses big time.....what are we missing cos id bet good money the chap i raced was flooring it...you can tell with the light exhaust smell and lil bit of smoke as it hits boost.....that too was a bug eye, is that model slower??

bug eyes are lard *****!!

it was prob just a uk 2000. <<<<slow!

well if thats the case then thats why we didnt get handed to on a plate :)

They are just not cool enough.. and rubbish at top end.

i wouldnt class the scoobs as a cool car at all to be fair, quite like the shape thats just finished but in all honesty if i were prepared to spend the money on servicing, id buy an Evo without a doubt

Im with you Tim. I posted in another thread that I raced a 04 or 05 STI (cannot remember the exact year) from 40mph to X amount of mph and we were exactly the same and I had my girlfriend also. I wasnt that surprised either and my car standard, yes standard. There was a Boxster (not S) too and we were all exactly the same.

Threads like this are so funny with some peoples views on how they compare car ie through mags from what the stats say lol.

I have driven quite alot of Subaru's new and old and too many people mistake their none refinment as being fast because it has a savage power delivery. The S3 has a luxury power delivery compared to old STI, but the needle goes up just as quick. New STI's are pretty boring to drive, to refinded and heavy and dull. Dont care what people say about my view, from my experience on track days and road drives in them thats what I think.

Dont really rate the new breed of STI's except new hot hatch version. The power to weight of a STI's suggested is roughly the same as a S3. What some people forget is the DRIVER is the MAIN reason for how a cars performs. Some people just dont no how to drive there car fast and safely. Raced a Focus ST the other night and the guy wasnt in the right gear for the corner and not on boost from the way I when past and left it for dead. The DRIVER matters more than anything to a way a car performs.

i could not agree more with you nattie. any scoob other than a classic IMO are in no comparison. there heavy, they tryed to add the "mod cons" which were poorly made. they just did not deliver like the classics. Classics a a been of insanity. Turbo 2000s and WRX`s are not as fun, but the STI is mental. i have driven other performance cars, other than a EVO they just make me smile like a chesh! i wish i could afford tto buy and run a evo.

i wish to have a go in a RS4, i got batterd by one when i owned my scooby. tho i dont mind that! could of been worse! could of been a S3!! (joking fellas)

:)

... not a fan of the new shape impreza, would love a P1 though :undwech:

my cousins was a 2002 sti ppp with certificate lol on afew occasions i had two up and still no difference, he couldnt believe it and i still dont but it happened very strange, definitely must be the weight because my mates version3 sti whooped me with 280bhp and whoops me even more now with over 500bhp lol quick car but after 20mins you want to get out because of the back pain
rather my s3 anyday

S3GAV... you are 100% right about standerd scooby seats, which is why the ltd edition PPP seats were made!! like so :)

Full leather recaro buckets! Never once had a numb bum! :)

Rear passengers beware. I know my ones slide all over the place with the slightest bit of spirited driving lol.

oh lord and they are the quality seats? it looks like black cling film pulled over a panini

the only jap car ive ever driven was my dads old nissan pulsar that was a lil beast good fun to drive and hardly ever broke down in 11 years. good lil car.

i always wanted one of those when i was a kid, although they arent remembered for their reliability :)

I still have a 1.1 saxo (shameful i know, getting an a3 asap!) but a 2005 plate STi was revving at me the other day at the lights and just wheel span for 5 minutes and i took him on the lights.. obviously got on a dual carriage way 2 mins later and he raped me lol, but it shows that just cause u have a fast car, ur not a good driver.

And he was wearing the cap and all :L

He'll have to show me how to do that in a 4wd lol

Our STI is a 56 plate hawkeye, well looked after and serviced by a specialist. I wouldnt say I lost big time but it is a fair bit quicker and that is in a straight line. Also no smoke from ours on boost LOL

Not really sure comparing an S3 with a road going rally car which the STI is, is really a fair comparison tho?!
