    Unhappy Disaster! gears won't engage???

I have a major problem on my hands. I am in leicester visiting the GF. Yesterday, at a set of traffic lights the clutch pedal didn't want to come up more than half way, And then when it does the gear box will "decide" intermitently if I can select 1st or not.

I am now sure it is either Master or slave clutch cylinder. Is this the correct diagnosis?

Any recommendations for a good garage in Leicester? I would have do the job myself... But I don't have the stuff to bleed the system nor do i have my toolkit. :@

Thanks in advance for any help offered guys... though I am in a pickle.

    Update;

The Clutch Slave cylinder is the cause of the problem. 500 job to do this and change the clutch in one go. I am seriously considering selling up and getting a new golf gt-tdi.

Any-who... I will make the decision in the next 24 hours.

Hmm I was considering a GTD, but they are so much money. You can pick up an alright 8p A3 tdi sport for 6k

I quite like the mk6... But having slept on it... I AM HAPPY TO SAY S**T HAPPENS. lol

Bin Diesel is staying for good. The justification for keeping my current car is simples (meerkat accent); Sorting the current problem is that the gearbox will be good for another 90k miles. I am gutted about the the bill... but all it really means to me is that I need to keep my planned mods on a back burner till next month.

The arguement of Golf 6 vs sportback A3 is one that the Mk6 wins hands down; 170 bhp... GTi interior... Vs Sortback = Rear end ugly as sin IMO. Mk6 wins.

They're dual mass too. In fact, diesels are where the dual mass came from really. The spring config on the flywheel absorbs the vibrations from the diesel engine (as they produce more vibration on idle then petrols). Why they fitted them to the petrols is beyond me.

OK, it smooths up gear changing. Whoopie. That's great when you have to change them when you have a clutch! I'd vote for a solid, lighter, flywheel that you don't have to change very 100K.

    Ok guys... Update no. 2:

The car went in today to a specialist because I wasn't happy about seeing a customer come back and switch moods on the garage I initially went to.

Bottom line... 705... New Sachs clutch, new dual mass flywheel, new slave and master cylinders, new gearbox bearings, full gearbox oil flush.

How does that sound? The guys were really helpful and I am feeling a sore bum hole... none the less. I love my green diesel Audi A3 130pd to bits... Kills off cars that you would never expect. The future plans are on hold as I am planing to buy a new A3 in the summer... Possible a 1.9pd if they still sell them in 130 bhp flavour. opinions please.

ah, yer that makes sense putting them on the diesels, but like you say, why put them on petrols?

mine needs replacing soon, gonna look into fitting a single mass fly instead, let the revs pickup faster too

that is rediclous, your looking at 1k for S3 dual mass, and thats a 10hour job as you have to drop quattro system. The LCR is only FWD! so should take half the time. I think your mate got bummed

unless hes got one of them uber rare 4wd cupra R's (euro import)

The car is also getting 2 new wishbones fitted aswell. They do knock atm. Looks like just the braking system left an I have a factory condition car... mechanically anyway. Visually... still a 9 year old.
