    Mud like coolent

Coolent light came on this morning so topped it up with some antifreeze, just poped out 2 see if it's all ok, opened it up to have a look and it's gone to a mud like texture, brown in colour. Never seen this before what should I do

    thanks mike

Blown headgasket or cracked head mate. Its gone like that because it has mixed with your engine oil.

what was it like before you put the antifreeze in?

if you mix the wrong antifreezes ive seen it go muddy before

drain and replace. and you hve to get the stat out to flush the block and we all know that getting the stat off a 20vt is totally totally impossible!!!111123

No it was fine before I put the new antifreeze in, got 2 drive it back home 30miles in a bit then I'll drain flush and refill it, cars been running fine and temp is normal. Hopefully a clean out will sort it out then

what anti freeze did you add and what was in it before?

mixing the wrong stuff turns antifreeze to sludge

youll want to back flush the rad, block, everything

personally id clean it and fill it with water. run the car for a couple days and start again till it runs clear then put the normal G12 in it.

I put some ready mixed halfords stuff which I know I shouldn't have done in the 1st place but thought it might be ok, the stuff already in there I'm not sure what it is. I've checked my oil and seems fine and just poked a pen into the coole t to see if was mud like all the way through but it seems to of just caused a layer on the top underneath is water like and is a bron colour, mate was saying if oil was in it then the colour would be whiteish

what's the best way to clean the system out

get the hoses off the rad and use the bottom pipe to back flush it

stat out and flush the block

fresh water in. run it for a few days and do it again. you could even put some biological washing powder in to disperse any grease thats in there if you really fancy it

You need some of the pink stuff, either actual G12 Plus or an equiv OAT compatable antifreeze.

As stated flush it and get that crud out and all good

On the Q & A for the product....

'Can I use this to top up G12 coolant in my 05 Golf GTI? '

Halfords Ready Mixed Top Up Antifreeze is the most suitable product from our range with which to top up your 2005 VW Golf being that it is an OAT based coolant similar to that recommended by the manufacturer.

Similar? WTF is similar? The answer they were looking for was 'No, you should use G12+ or G12++, but use this because we don't care and just want to sell it to you for a million quid......'

    Retards.

It has been a bit like that. One minute it was a quick and easy head removal. Then the block swap. Then the second head removal and refit.

Still, as my sig says..... Never take life too seriously.... Noone gets out alive anyway!

To be honest mate, I've had help from a couple of good mates, we've had a laugh, smoked probably a thousand cigarettes, and boogied and made stupid lyrics to songs. All in all, a good crack really.

All in all, hard work, disappointing at times, but not all bad!

ah its a risk, unless you knew it was going to sludge, what can you do... there are quite a few different types, some cause more of a mess than others.

this could be a good time to get a new expansion tank. they make engine bays look great, even im tart enough to have bought a new one before. 9 from VW
