Question BMC CDA - Is it worth it?

    As the title says people...

Is the BMC really worth it? I already have a Green Cotton panel filter but i'm now thinking i should get a BMC at some point. Just want to know your views on this and if you think it's worth it?

Look forward to your input guys.

    Thanks

    Jay

I was lookin at them the other day they make your car sound good with the noice from the air going through it my friend has 1 on his E46 bmw and it sounds good but dosent really make much differance in performance mite be more than a k&n kit because it is an enclosed unit. Watch this video!!!

I think most people stick to using a good panel filter.
The problems are mainly the under bonnet temperatures
Most induction kits dont have a good cold air feed as the battery is directly infront of the filter,
That said, if an induction kit that realy worked, i would be intrested .
For now though. Most i will probably end up fitting a slightly larger cold air feed to my standard air box.

if i was to buy an induction kit it would be one of these, make sure i had a better caf than the original one though

i dont think you would see any gains, but more importantly i dont think you would see any losses as has been proven with other induction kits, due to the fact that its enclosed and wont suffer from heat soak

Hmmmm really?? But wouldn't it suffer from heat soak with an open cone?

Good to see you and your advice on here Badger. You don't know me but i remember you off seatcupra.net a few years back. My bro was dj bigfella, the one with the euro'd silver mk3 ibiza cupra on dz wheels, (9 & 7.5x16s), polished engine bay, Golf+ mag feature?

Not sure if you remember but ello anyway

Jay dont waste your money mate, BMC CDA's are sh*t, they look nice but thats it.

Either smooth your original airbox and fit a 4" cold air feed to it OR buy a Jetex cone filter. Everything else is a waste of money mate.

What's so good about the jetex filter Dan? Wouldn't it suffer from heat soak though as it's open to hot air from the engine bay?

Would it cause any damage to the MAF though being an open cone? Really thinking about a different filter. Now i'm stuck between the BMC and Jetex. The BMC's 200+ price puts me right off!

dont pay 200 for a BMC id have been annoyed had i, its an improvment over std imo but not 200 worth im even thinking of going jr to see the difference so the BMC cant be worth 200 or i would'nt be thinking of changing otherwise. however its not like everyone says it does work but maybe not as well as other options

Yeah the price is ridiculous! People keep saying 'jr setup', is it a special kinda setup with added extra's to help? I thought it was just a normal cone filter attached and that was it?

Tom - let us know what happens with the pipercross.

Will do mate, I ran it for about a week a year or so back (pre remap) and just went for a panel instead. Not for any great reason, however now the exhaust, tip and remap have been done and its nice cold weather I'll give it a punt.

I didnt otice any gains on it with the standard map but it did sound nice. Its going to be even louder now I'm sure

be interesting to get some fresh info on this subject..... obviously the bone of contention being that the cone enables more air in but 'hotter' air.... could do with someone willing to RR with and without the cone....although not entirely conclusive as the bonnet will have to be down otherwise the cone will be pulling in unrealistically colder air

i can see the need for cones on the BT conversions but on a reampped car it appears to be for sound only.... closest test info we have is from Glen who RR'd without a filter at all and then the box filter with 4" feed...any takers or are we just going to keep fitting these because history (and K&N's website)tells us that they improve performance

Well the cone is back on and it certainly doesnt feel any quciker, or slower!. Still that was only a quick blast around the block.

To be honest it doesnt sound any louder apart from at really low revs and under load.

Meh, I think I'll stick the stock airbox back on once the filters cleaned as I just 'prefer' it. Cant really say why but the cone looks **** in the engine bay, much prefer the look of the airbox if I'm being honest (shallow maybe but f*ck it, its my car! )

However when another RR day comes around I'd be happy to take the cone with me and do a comparison run so we can put it to bed once and for all. Although my cars only mapped and still running a hair dryer for a turbo.

I'd agree fully with the BT comments though.

well im having my car on the rollers soonish as i want to know what power ive actually got

so i could do a comparison, but first i gotta get a heatshield and caf knocked up, so wont be for at least 2/3 weeks before i could do this

note: mine is bt so more likely to see gains than you guys with just maps?

RR is a flawed test... does your car have 70mph winds blowing past the whole car?

log Ait's on tha road... and airflow in your comparison
block 003 for airflow, 118 for ait and actual boost

more realistic test in real world terms

JR is a Jetex Response filter.. The Leon Cupra-R boys use them.. as do the ibiza lads.. and get good airflow results
I stock them and Green filters.. both of which work well and filter well.

JR's are blue, Greens are, erm, green in colour..

How much is the Jetex then matey? Also, what's the deal wit heat soak in high temperatures? Will this suffer in heat ie. summer?

Having been up to R-tech at the weekend and speaking to Nick he very quickly assured me that my BMC style induction was rubbish!
He said he had done tests on these induction kits and was proven they are very restrictive.
I was recommended either keep the standard airbox with a good panel filter or relocate a cone filter into the front bumper

Wouldnt bother with that kev, its a right rip off, the filter is just a JR filter and the heat sheild can be bought off jabba for about 55 i believe, so its a rip off.

Also a few of the SCN argued wether fitting a heat sheild would defeat the point of having a cone filter as it restrictes the air flow around it but it's open to debate.

Matt - i saw that BMC eariler on pistonheads too but people are saying it can be restictive so i'm going to leave it.

Kev - that setup looks real nice but not worth it though for some sheet of metal to go around it!

Thanks for the edit with pics badger.

So now i'm stuck bewteen the green cotton and jetex lol. What's it to be Bill!? What do you recommend out of the 2?

i think its a direct cost versus benefit argument.... Bill's right in that we arent gonna get any conclusive figures on the RR's but then we aren't going to on the road either using VAG as the flip side benefit of the cone is argued to be lost via the 'hotter' air which can't be measured (with our sensors anyway)...... all we know is that it doesnt equate to anything much on a mapped or unmapped S3 running a KO4... that's enough for me to keep my hand in my pocket on this one - also agree with Tom, ive had cars in the past with a cone and they looked really good, but it doesnt really look decent in this bay for some reason

Pete...... how long has it been you tail!!

my only worry running a cone filter is it damaging the MAF or are these JR ones ok to use with out a MAF failing?
MAF's fail.. they just do.. cr4p components from Bosch/VAG
Its no guarantee that fitting a filter wont preclude an already known weak sensor to fail.. It wont be the filter which caused it however.

Mount them so they dont see shocks or vibrations and all will be well..
