Ł113 is probably about right for audi dealer prices. However, no doubt you could get this done cheaper in a local garage, also you should consider doing it yourself. it is a bit of a ballache to do (no matter how many people on here who will post up saying yeah it is a 30 minute job...) but there are good guides available online and it is do-able with a bit of care and a fair bit of effort.

I would not pay more than Ł40 out of principle, although it's a bit of a pain in the arse to do, it's fairly simple if you have the right tools.

thats so bad that you guys get ripped off so badly. with S4s they love paying through the nose for trivial things and people end up being mugged off due to an illusion that its some form of exotica

in this case is a 20vt, one of the most common engines going

dude fair enough if you dont want to do it yourself, but this job is seriously easy, a little bit fiddly but easy, if you got a mate who is handy with the spanners slip him Ł40 and im sure he wouldnt mind doing it for you following one of the guides on here you couldnt go wrong

if not though a garage should not charge you more than an hours labour and no more than Ł20-30 in parts (my stat plus 2 bottles of coolant cost me Ł17)

it certainly isn't 'very very easy' Zeeeebo.....dunno if the S3 is tighter to get to than your A3 but you run the risk of turning an hour job into a several hour job extremely easily..... i paid my neighbour with a crate of lager

yer the a3 was very fiddley and took ages for the bottom screw to undo and put back in but i had a bendy extension arm which helped soooooo much! as soon as the 2 screws are done its very easy! im not familar with an s3 bay but i presume its roughly the same!

Good call Matt, goes without saying but easy for someone to miss.....

zeeeebo, its a different lay out at the front im sure as i think the S3 has more obstructive pipework, but same obstruction with alternator making your life hell IIRC

those o rings are used on for a few cooling things on the golfs. basically after a few years they go brittle and stay flat, basically they dont seal properly.

on old cars like that, id recommend you put new seals in wherever you have to take one out

on cars where its hard to get to these water connections, youd be gutted if you do all the work and then once you start it up it leaks from the joint

Remove aux belt, remove top alternator bolt, slacken bottom one. Pry with pry bar, alternator falls towards front of car. Unbolt hard plastic pipe from block face (2 x 10mm bolts), pull thermo out, replace, repeat process in reverse.

    Easy peasy.

    Hi guys

Just did the 49C trick thing on the climate control unit

The 49C reads 78şC at standstill (car has warmed up), when driving it varied, up to 80 but with a minimum of 73şC. The gauge in the dash varies as well but between 80 and 88şC.

I am assuming that this is bad. And probably needs a new thermostat?

    Alex

EDIT: Oh yeah, and my mpg has dropped from ~29.5 to 26.5 mpg

my mate is always drinking whilst working on his grass track car, more evident when hes welding in new panels etc

welding starts off sweet as a nut and ends up looking like pigeon s*** lol

and he usually has a burnt hand where he loses concentration and tries welding his hand to the car lol

WOW! Just quoted Ł190 labour for changing the thermostat on my S3 from the dealer, that doesnt included parts. They said thats 2.5 hours work and then they said thats subject to stripping time so it might go up if they find that there are some bolts that are hard to undo!!!

Hmmmm. I guess buy that they mean in case 1 of the 2 (yes - just 2) 10mm, non torqued bolts they would have to undo to get the thermo out is hard.

    What a f**kin joke!!

essex, it would be mad... just get some spanners and do it. its an old car anyway, it doesnt matter who works on it.

the bolts want to be 10nm, thats about the only technical part.
