Is this for real ? (ebay link, Head gasket seal)

Its like a HD version of radweld.

It was a popular option to keep some of the head prone 2.2TDi Toyotas going for as long as possible. Due to a design flaw causing the head to crack.

Its also a popular way to clog the rest of the system with gunge, i suppose if you are looking to "fix" it to get shot of it, then this is the kind of thing to use

hummm... wouldn't touch it with a barge pole... cylinder pressures of 2000 to 3000 psi in a turbo charged engine at the mercy of something like 'radweld'.... no ta...

Reminds me of when Clarkson used a Cadbury's Cream Egg to seal the leak in the radiator of his Porsche 928 LOL...

That sceptical eh ? I agree with the massive amounts of PSI But my HG has not been confirmed, a possible crack in a RAD it might prove useful?

I personally wouldn't put anything other than what is supposed to in there... G12 mix or nowt... its not a solution to a problem, its just delaying the inevitable in my opinion...

If you have a rad with a hole, get a rad without one... if you have a head gasket issue, get a gasket that hasn't got an issue...

My opinion of course but I just think you will end up doing more damage as a leak is a leak and bunging it full of 'newspaper' doesn't stop it from being a hole...

So yes... that sceptical LOL... ;P

Ah roger dodger.. just chasing around a problem at the moment.. loosing coolant somewhere :( had a few posts about it and local VAG garage cant diagnose it :(

Im not to sure exactly, first ive seen or heard about it... I suppose it must be a resin that hardens when it comes in contact with air and heat... ahhh **** knows !"

slightly worrying, when i bought my car and i changed the stat i found what i could only describe as vaseline/clear grease in the whole coolant system, not just a little bit i mean it was everywhere over the stat, senda, all the pipes, the rad, header tank etc so i flushed the system like 5 or 6 times to clear it, is it possible that the previous owner used something similar to what tankie posted up to mask a leak?

since flushing i do not lose coolant, no coolant being burnt and no coolant in with the oil but is it possible that it has done its job and masked a leak of some kind and as of yet has not reoccured?

The problem is by pouring it into the cooling system, you have no control over where it hardens....

If you are losing water through the HG I would expect to see evidunce of this in the oil... checking the end of the dipstick and/or oil filler cap should at least give you a heads up... other than that it could be water pump o-ring, thermostat o-ring or maybe even the heater matrix... I had the heater matrix go on my A4... nasty smell in the car made me very ill in fact... whole dash out to change it on the A4....

Ive seen this stuff before, once its in the system it looks like theres millions of tiny copper particles in your coolant. I cant say whether it works or not though.

Good tip Jon, ive had the system flushed when i had the stat changed but its possible that C**T who sold it to me may have used it :(

bad drills

Ah thanks TB. She "Daisy" smokes a bit more than all the other cars on the road when she is cold and has a temp missfire first thing in the morning, I dont think ill opt for this stuff tbh...

No scum on Dipstick and no abnormal amount on filler cap... due to alot of short journies :(

if i close my eyes and squeeze hard enough.. will it go away ?.....

i wouldnt touch it even to "get me home" would cause more greif than it worth!

hope you find your leak

Ok so to clear this up, what do you look for if the HG is going?

Its just the symptoms tankie's getting is what i get, more smoke/steam cant really tell which, little coolant loss, like once every 2-3 months i made need to top up the coolant, this normal or not?

Well ppl often say check the Oil filler cap and dipstick for white spunky like scum. however this can be missleading as lots of short trips also produces this due to condensation in the system.

there is also a very quick test they can do at most garages where they take a sample of coolant and add a die that turns a certain colour if combustion gas's are present. I believe thats called a block test ?...

I think a simular one can be done with the oil but not ventured down that road yet.

if your only topping up ever few months it can quite simply be down to the cold weather and SG reading of your antifreeze. i know cars arnet supposed to just loose fluid from an enclosed system but im told that its not uncommon with all the freezing and thoring etc.

A cracked head or gasket can also let coolant into the combustion chamber when sat overnight etc or off for a long time. WHen started the engine can missfire on that cylinder untill the cooland is coughed out.

White smoke can indicate burning coolant, and Blue smoke may indicate burning oil.. Get someone to follow you and do a sharp change down and nail it.. see if any puffs spurt out the back :)

if all that fails, then your in the same boat as me....

yo yo yo, seen this on flea-bay... seems a lil "to good to be true" Anyone had any experience with it ?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/K-SEAL-CYLIND...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item1c0bfdccdb

a Tenner against £480 for a garage to repair a possible head gasket... seems worth a try first..

I had a freelander 1.8 k series petrol before my a3.

The stuff above is well known in the rover/landrover world! hence the name k-seal

Mixed opinions on the land rover forums, good for a quick fix if your looking to get rid but not a long term solution.

Never had to use it myself as must have had the only freelander not to have a HGF!

Used it a few times though work.
As said above its good for a quick fix, but certainly not permanent.
Has also been known to block the thermostat up.
Also it doesnt work 100% of the time, if you have caught the HGF soon enough it may be alright though.

i have got the same symptoms tankie.
I am losing small amounts of coolant, i have had a mechanic check the whole system and presusure test it. no leak was found.
I have got a greenish scum under the oil filler cap which may be due to infrequent, short runs, (condensation). And none on the dipstick.
my mechanic said to not be overly concerned about the hg just yet, he said that i would get symptoms (already stated) like lumpy idle on a cold start due to the coolant being burnt off.
I was was happy with the conclusion. until i started my car last nite and it had lumpy idle which i have never had before.
I tried it again this afternoon and it started and idled fine, bit of a mystery.
If it is the hg, what would you expect to pay.

I was quoted £500 from a VAG specialist in Essex (colchester) im there during the week and in Salisbury on the weekends, but thats the cheapest ive had a quote for... some companies want excess of a K. Speaking to the guy who owns the place he said the HG and Heads where harder than a woodpeckers nose and that there are weaker points in the coolant system, ie RADs and hoses joints.. some of which cannot be seen easily/at all ! :(

ID say run the engine get it hot then lift up the bonnet with the engine off see if you can see any steam or smoke as if coolant is being burnt on a hot surface... Failing that you can take the bumper off and have a good gander at the RAD.. at the mo i suspect this is my leak.... but cannot explain the sh*ty lumpy idol when cold.....

Have you had a block/ coolant test done yet ? Its usually a good indicator if combustion gas's are present..

Where abouts do you live ?...

Gary

im pretty sure it is the head gasget now.
Just done a 20 mile round trip checked the oil filler cap which has a lot of white scum and the dipstick which has been clear up until now has got white scum on also.
I live in devon.
Im hoping its not going to be too bad, il get all the bits and itl be a cash price for my mechanic to do the work.
