Nattie, what is looking to be the plan is get a full BAM engine.

Remove the head from BAM and sell. Fit my APY head to it. Fir forged pistons to the block. Install. Drive. Sell APY crank and 3 remaining good rods & pistons from APY block, along with anything else worth selling. which isn't needed.

The reason being that find an APY engine, or block, isn't proving to be easy. I've spent all day on the phone pretty much!

Oh I see now. I have seen a few S3's for breaking on ebay and Edition 38 classifies as a couple I think, not sure what engines they are though.

Just had a quick look on ETKA and part numbers for APY/BAM/AMK etc blocks are the same

    06A block...

Checked the A4 (2001) too and shows the block part number to start with 06B

Essentially I think you can get away with using the block from almost any FWD VAG based car (Ibiza, Leon, Golf, Polo, A3, TT) but you may have use your pistons and crank as they will be forged... the 1.8t list thingy in the stickies should give you an idea on engine codes you can use...

This is for a 93k 99 S3. He wants 800 for the whole engine which I take it comes with the turbo. Worth asking what engine code it is.

Can you check the AGU for me mate? I looked on the stickies and it doesn't mention block....

I've found one at a breakers for good money, and the head has got good resale value if the block is the same...

It also has a forged crank....

AGU is the same part number but has a different suffix letter 06A 103 101 H.... AMK/BAM/APY have a J suffix

I think all this relates to is the block and pistons combo listed under ETKA as they don't list the block on its own...

    Block will be the same...

OK then peoples.... I have a cunning plan. A plan so cunning you could pin a tail on it and call it a weasel...

    So here goes.

Scratch buying a BAM engine for a grand.

New plan is to buy an AGU engine for 500 with 61K on her. Save myself the money for new forged pistons. When it arrives, strip AGU engine pretty much completely. Remove head, and all ancillaries, remove pistons and rods. Strip to just block and crank.

Sell unneeded bits of AGU, such as big port head and inlet mani.... and make as much cash as possible.

Remove APY block from the S3. Strip pistons out.

Reassemble AGU block with forged rods and S3 pistons, using the AGU crank is possible as it's still forged.

Refit 'AGY' into S3. Fire up and be happy. Maybe.

Sounds complicated, and you're banking on selling all the bits to make some cash. Is a loan an option so you can get all the bots in one go and pay it off month by month?

How about doing what i'm doing and build a stroker engine using a TDI crank and bore out the original block?

Reading the thread i thaught i'd give my 2p

I suspect that the headgasket has blown between an oilway and the cylinder. On the intake stroke you've got >5bar of oil pressure shoving oil into the cylinder, and when the piston comes back up, you hydrolock it and hence bend the conrod. You'll probably find a ton of oil has made its way out thru the exhaust valves and into the turbo/cat, so you may well find the cat itself is dead.

Did you actually inspect the headgasket on cylinder 3 when you pulled the head off?

why wouldnt you use the head off the donor engine, purely because you have one that you know is like new?

o also 500 for 61k agu, bargain or bargain? is she a runner? if you do go down this route i may be in the market to have afew bits off you, possibly!!

hydrolock is when the cylinder fills up with oil/coolant due to blown gasket/head damage on the down stroke and when the piston travels back up the fluids are compressed but cant escape so something has to give i.e the rod bends as this is usually the weak spot, more so on s3's with them not being forged

Fortunately, I have enough dosh floating about at the moment to be able to do it on the fly mate. The selling of bits for cash is merely to recoup losses at the end of the project...

HG was fine mate, 100% in tact with no blows. I would guess the oil in the cyl was due to the break in the bore allowing oil through the ring. Head and HG were fine, meaning it can only be the block really. Hydrolock is unlikely due to no oil in the water, and no water in the oil....

Have a look at the photos I'm going to upload in a few mins, you will see how bad the bore is.

Yes mate, she's a runner indeed. Give me a shout if you need anything. The head may already of been bagsied! lol :-). I want to use the head off the S3 which has been rebuilt. Mainly because it will be a new engine really, which will be nice!

    Photos from this evening's work:

All the pistons out. They're actually in reverse order - looking at cyl 1's rod, it's also got a slight kink.

Engine bay, with the block nearly ready to drop. All the loom disconnected, need to drop the turbo oil lines and a few other bits and bobs, but mainly ready to go

Cylinder 3 bore damage. It's actually worse than it looks.... You can also see where the snapped oil squirter used to live. I found that in the sump...

If you've got spare dosh aren't you tempted to go all out and go BT. With the engine out its got to be tempting!!!! Unlucky on the damage but fair play for the hard work. Hope everything works out for you.

LOL, not THAT much spare dosh! Fixing this lump is going to cost over a grand, and to be fair, if that doesn't get done, then a BT is pretty useless lol.

I'll save that for another day! Once the engine works....

So Welly, do you have any idea why the fitting of the FMIC has caused this or was it just pure coincidence?

FMIC wouldn't have been the cause of this IMO.... Excessive boost at some point I reckon... maybe Welly bought the car with most of this damage already present...

Bottom line here is, who knows? It's impossible to say after the event.

Whether the cooler being fitted means less restriction in the boost pipes + cooler air = enough extra torque to bend the rod. However, as Tuffty said, maybe it was there and has always been an underlying problem - a ticking time bomb waiting to go!

What matters now is getting it sorted, and making sure it doesn't happen again!

I am going to order up the AGU today for next week, head will be back next week, rods will be here next week. So next week, it's on like Donkey Kong biatch!

Bill/Tuffty, can you remember off hand what the required torque is on the ARP bolts on those IE Rods? Doing my research now so that I can just get on when they arrive.

Can't really find much useful info for some reason.

dont ask me why, but when i looked at the photo of the four rods/pistons the bent one looked like it was doing some sort of funky dance? (no im not drunk or high lol)
just my whacky brain i guess

450 for the agu is a total steal mate, congrats on that, where did you find it, locally?

rods from ie here next week you say, thats quick delivery coming from us, i waited over two weeks for the last stuff i ordered from there

well i wanted a spare head but someone else could put it to far better use than what i had planned for it so no worries there bert, let me know what you got available when you figured it all out
