    Selling a higher milage S3

Just wanted a few opinions on this (and you lot are more opinionated that most!)

Going to be putting my S3 up for sale next week as my Rallye sold today.

My S3 is on 130k, last stamped service was at 100k, was serviced at 120k by me (ex Volkswagen employee). It was converted to the 330/350bhp MTM spec at 80k by QST with full documentation. I was going to get it fully serviced (including Haldex) at a local specialist along with the Cambelt/Tensioners/Waterpump and maybe get the coil packs and MAF replaced as a precautionary measure.

Do you guys think its really worth me getting all this done? One drive in the car shows its been looked after and drives nicely, Im just a bit concerned that the milage may put people off even when there is no need for it to.

Also a bit worried about timewasters and test pilots, people seem to see a higher powered S3 for sale and just want to turn up and have a test drive of it to see what its like. Would asking to see proof of insurance for the actual vehicle and not just that they have 3rd party cover on thier own insurance be a bit of an overkill? Ive just let the Rallye go for quite a drop over what Id have ideally liked because I wanted a quick pain free sale (which I got)

    Take it easy

were you thinking of doing the work again yourself mate? if you can do it for obv cheaper then a garage i would. As you say a few people may be put off high milegers so if you can say as much has been changed as is necessary is should put some potential buyers thoughts at rest. i'd ask for proof of id insurance etc if i was you they'd be loads of boy racers wanting a quick dash. why you selling if you dont mind me asking and what you thinking of getting instead?

Ill be getting the work done at my local specialist, been using them for years on cars and trust them, also gets a stamp in the book. Its the boy racer "whatll it do mister" type
Im worried about, I dont really need to sell the car but just think its the right thing to do so dont wanna be messed about.

Im selling as Ive had it for a couple of years now, lovely car and never skipped a beat but in all honestly I drive 10 miles to work then home again 5day a week and thats it, it sits in the garage from 11am friday till 6am monday as Im out with mates or just hungover! I just want something boring and mundane, Ive sold my Rallye so Ive got the garage space now and I was thinking about getting myself another bike for fast fun as I really miss them.

think your always gonna have the test pilot problem mate..... only thing id do is suggest that any test drives are backed up with a bank statement to show they have the funds, if they want the car im sure anyone would agree to that..... not as though they can go and get another MTM from around the corner.... also maybe get them to purchase a days insurance online (10 tops) for your peace of mind

Yeah I suppose thats true mate, didnt think about the day insure option. The other thought I had was asking for a 500 deposit to be shown before taking the car out. Ive usually swapped or PXd cars in the past so not really had to worry about sellling

Did Portsmouth not pay your wages, so you had to sell both cars?

    Only kidding mate.

It's that magic 100k mark isn't it, people want to buy a car with under that mileage, and anything above it seems to lose a chunk of it's value! I'm not saying there's anything wrong with your car of course, but in effect, yes, high mileage puts people off. I also find it odd that people sell cars just after they 'serviced' it, like the the service guy has found a fault, and you want to get rid... my opinion obviously. Whey not sell the car for a 1-200 quid less and state it requires a service?.

Good luck with the sale anyways Grath.

As for test pilots, I would put no test pilots in the ad, but if they turned up to have a look, then, I'd happilly take them out for a drive round the block myself.

If they stack your car running on 3rd party this will only cover what they hit, no repairs to the car they are driving (yours).

You definitively want to make sure they have proper insurance if you are going to let them drive as all policies differ and these days fully comp policies quite often don't provide the automatic cover on another vehicle like they used to. Plus there are usually other restrictions that apply which may prevent their policy from being honoured even if the policy states they can drive, such as age or experience. I.e. a policy may state that it covers driving another vehicle, but a generic statement somewhere else may limit this to only being applicable if the policy holder is 25 or older.

Also if you give consent to drive to someone without insurance you will liable since the car is insured under your name and they have not stolen it - you could be in bother with the police as well.

Good point JoJo, never really thought of it like that. I mean it is due a service really which is why I thought Id get it done, will give them the option as Im happy to get the work done but I know it doesnt need it also.

Ive never understood the whole 100k barrier either, I bought mine on 110k and didnt even spare a second thought about it, know the bloke had has issues trying to sell it tho with people sayiing it was high milage

I bought mine on 112K knowing it was bullet proof and looked after. Not every buyer is anal about the 100K mark.

Yeah this is a big worry of mine, its a total mindfield with insurance matters, Im quite happy to take them out in it but naturally most people will want to drive it themselves, catch 22 situation as I dont want to put my car or others at risk and I dont want to scare off serious potential buyers

just use the day insure route and select a reputable company..... when we sold the yellow Mini i was going to insist on Aviva's, not cos i work for them but because I was confident from reading the policy through, that it would cover the eventuality that i was worried about....job done

It's a 300bhp+ car Grath, not a 150bhp hatchback. You are placing a lot of trust on a stranger to drive a car with so much power no knowing what type of driving experience they have. I mean if a buyer turned up in a Skyline or Evo, or something with a bit of poke, then you would give the nod right?

I wanted to do that when selling my A4, but the ad was going up in the pilots' crew room at work and we actually have Test Pilots here... didn't want to put them off!

Good luck with the sale Grathies, i'm sure you'll know the serious buyer(s) when they turn up. For everyone else just drive them around the block and send them home!

Its ok, I had backup with me! Dont really think about it at the time, to be honest walking from the bank in Portsmouth with 10k was the dangerous bit, could have been robbed by the players! Mind you, I dont think anyone around here has ever had that much money so wouldnt expect you to be carrying it!

Its a difficult situation, but I would probably just take them out for a drive myself, then after that you will see if they are serious or not?

Selling a car can be a headache, but yours is still unique in the fact its BT MTM

Mileage should not be an issue aslong as the car drives bang on...Your interior must be in pristine condition after all them under age girls you have had

LOL..... All the best with it, dont price it too cheap! I always price above what I really want...

    You will miss it though......

Yeah I know what you mean mate, it is a unique car! Ill miss it but time for a change, its not getting used like it should. It will be going up fairly cheap for what it is, want a pain free sale as my times worth more than spending hours dealing with timewasters!

And easy with the under age, they were all 17 or over, you make me sound like Paul Gadd with all that talk!

I was thinking of putting it up for 7800 offers considered. If I get the asking price then Ill get the cambelt etc done. Not totally sure on that tho, hard to price it up really. Sure someone will be along to tell me its priced too high!

I wouldn't change anything that doesn't need it. For example don't fit a new MAF or coil packs just to be able to say it in your sales blurb as it's extra cash spent for no reason. When was the cam belt last changed? If it's very close to service then get it done or knock a little money off the price as people will ask about that one and not so much about other engine components.
Try to market towards enthusiasts first, ie all the VW / Audi / Seat forums. These guys shouldn't be too fussed about 100k + mileages.

Thanks JS, I dont wanna overprice it or sell myself too short.

HTC, cambelt was done at 80k when the conversion was, will leave it all for now and leave it as a bargaining tool for someone. Will be putting it on PistonHeads and will get some mates to put it up on the different forums for me

Is 130K classed as high mileage these days ?

To some people anything over 80k is high even tho with some S3s 10years old its natural if they were used daily. My Rallye having 100k on is was seen as high, even tho thats 5k a year over its life
