No that doesn't sound good! Mine uses a very small amount over a year as you'd expect but I dont cover any more than 9k miles a year.

Did you check the oil level when you got it back from being serviced? It's possible that they underfilled it. I'd just keep a close eye on it for a while.

I've had to top mine up once or twice but I do alot of miles. Sounds like the garage that did the service didn't top it up enough.

Mine also likes a fair bit of oil.. No leaks either and no smoke from the exhaust.. Where would you start troubleshooting? Dont want to go looking for a problem that doesn't exist if it does just like oil??

It's very possible that the people who serviced it, didn't fill it up to the required level. Just keep an eye on it in the next 1,000 miles.

In just under 3000 miles I've had to add less than a 1/4 of a ltr, my previous A4 1.8T Sport would use about 1 ltr every 2000 miles or so.

That isnt good, have you checked in the intercooler pipework that oil isnt getting in there sounds silly but if oil is passing through the turbo seals then there will be oil residue in the intercooler pipework. you wont necessarily notice it unless you get a mate to drive behind you and check for blue smoke on boost.

High revving engines tend to burn a little oil due to oil pressure and temp however that is a lot in that amount of time especially if its been driven sensibly.

Our skyline is very highly strung and that uses no oil even under immense pressure like racing round the ring in 35 degree temps so I would start some self diagnosis to put your mind at easy and to sort any issues out before more lasting damage is done.

i have noticed a little oil residue in Induction Hose just before the MAF
could this be the seals in the turbo on the way ?

No, thats the PCV system dumping oil back into the TIP.

Maybe they put a really low viscosity oil in, check that 1st. My main diagnosis would be he one already suggested several times that u seemed to have ignored, they underfilled it at the service and checked the level cold without starting it first and turning off and rechecking - ignore the gloommysters and check the obvious first

yer sorry i overlooked the part about underfilling, i was there when the service was done, by a friend, oil level was fine, i did use coma 5w 30 semi synthetic, as i plan on service every 6-7000 miles, i guess all i can do is keep an eye on it, maybe try better oil next time

You would presume that a competant garage would check this before letting a car go back to a customer but I agree that would be the best place to start and see if you loose the same oil in a similar period of time.

Not trying to be gloomy and I really hope there isnt a problem its better to spend some time checking simple things like smoke, oil residue etc to avoid spending lots of cash with a garage or do any lasting damage, only trying to help but I am no mechanic just learnt owver the years with various high powered supercharged VW's and Turbo charged ricepods.

    Sorry to pinch this one....
i noticed the other day that one of the pipes connecting to my dump valve has leaked slightly oilly air. (it is what i presume is the inlet to the dump valve. the oposite side to where it connects to the TIP.)
im going to replace the clip and inspect the hose for damage.
I was just cocerned that the air escaping was oilly, is this to be expected?
    Any advice apreciated.

i dont think there is anything different about the changing method. when i had my oil change done my mechanic let the oil drain longer than he normally would have as he was checking something else on the car. when he topped the oil back up it actually took nearlly 5 litres where as it normally takes 4.5.

I'm using about a litre every 1.5k also.. A mate of mine who used to work at Audi said they can use a fair bit of oil but perhaps not as much as what im using. I've had a mate follow and there's no smoke, and defo no leaks.. Surely if the seals in the turbo were gone the oil level wouldn't drop that quickly would it? One would expect to find some effect from broken turbo seals? Other than oil loss that is..

I do an oil change every ~5k, and never need to top up more than once in that time, and not more than ~1/4 litre.

    Cheers,

I think you need to check that the intercoolers are clear of oil. Oil could be collecting there. Wouldn't neccessarily give you a smoking exhaust as it won't be burning off.

So if there is oil in the intercoolers then the seals on the turbo are gone? Is this just a case of new seals or is it a new turbo?

I think a small ammount of oil in the intercooler may not be a cause for concern, but if there's a lot, that's not good at all.
I think you can get the turbo seals replaced.

I've not had to put any oil in my S3, and I did 9k miles or so over 2 years before I serviced it myself, using the correct VAG spec oil, Quantum Gold or something similar.

it is stated in my handbook that it may burn upto 1 litre per 1000 miles.
mine uses about 1 litre every 2500 miles. just keep an eye on your levels, you will soon get to know what is normal for your car and then you can spot major drops.

I've had the car about 2.5 years and covered about 6k miles. oil level exactly where it was 2.5 years ago. Mileage covered is either very short journeys in town and half way round m25 journeys.

erm, that reminds me time for an oil change ! BTW, the last oil change was a long life one.

If I was you mate I'd save yourself the hassel and just get it checked over by a VAG specialist. By the time you've gone through a few of our guessed suggestions you'll be another 40 down in oil costs!
