How can I tell if I need to align the throttlebody with vag-com once I've cleaned it? Will the freeware version of Vag-Com allow me to reset it if I need to?

you should re align it after cleaning yes, and the shareware version of VAG com won't let you do this, you need to access block 098 and switch to basic settings and it'll do itself from there.

I presume the registered version with a generic USB lead can do it, though?

Thanks very much. Just waiting for the lead now.

In addition and future reference. If you have an AGU engine, alignment is automatic each time you turn the ignition on. Just leave the key at the first position until you here the whirring from the throttle body stop, whilst not touching the accelerator pedal.

Nope, just AGU engines. They are the only cable throttle engine, all the rest (as far as I know) are drive by wire, meaning they need alignment.

Ah yes i see now.

Could do with getting myself some vagcom but its soooo expensive. I prefer the liquid S3 as it has a built in display but obviously less functionality
