Reprograming Keys?

Has any one out there reprogramed thier own key ive just tryed reprograming a key for my S3 using info from this site, but ive not got any where with it.
The lock smith who cut the key for me said only audi main dealers can program audi spaire keys but im sure ive seen threads on this site about people who have reprogramed keys with out the main dealers help?
any help from you guys would be great.

Sometimes you can 'programme' a key thats already coded to the car thats ran outta battery and you replace it, but as far as I know only Audi can actually code the key to the car in the first place, its all done down a secure line to stop theives!

how much does it cost at audi as i locked myself out the other day so could do with a spare

The price i was giving was approx £160ish for new key, key fob and programing.

IIRC it can be done by yourself with something called vag commander.
