It's probably the warning sign of the VVT/ timing chain tensioner on the way. As long as it gets quite as soon as the car starts you are fine, when the noise gets worse or does not go away it's time to fix

Its at the other end of the head to the cam belt. Its under the cover and is a hydraulicly controlled device to tension the cam chain. Some S3's have a variable valve timing feature built in too, depends on engine code.

If it goes away it's cool

I don't experience it on my car, but have done on the A3, when it eventually wouldnt shut up we repalced the tensioner and it was a 300 part on it's own.

Sometimes a good flush and oil change can help, as the long intervals don't do these cars any favours

I think some diesel ish noise is a design feature of this engine, especially if it has been stood for a while.

All S3's sound like diesels on startup. People seem to forget that behind the flared wheelarches and tacky mirrors there's a 4 cylinder 1.8 engine, which has been around since the mid 90's.

Most people who have never heard the 1.8 20v turbo engine will be shocked when they first fire it up! It sounds like a bag of nails in comparison to alot of other engines. You get the diesel sound and a load of tapping.

It's the secondary air pump housing leaking. Very common problem on mk4 Golfs.
    Here's the fix. http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/141240.aspx

Thanks for the guide but i'm not too sure how a loud vacuum noise can be mistaken for an engine sounding like a diesel!

Personally if your that worried about it just drop it into a garage for a quick check, they probably say its normal and send you on your way without charging you.

The sencondary air pump sounds like a vacuum hoover so I doubt it's that.

If it sounds like a diesel/vaccum cleaner when you start it up, & then stops after a minute or 2, it's the secondary air pump case rivets that have failed. I've had the same problem on 2 mk4 golfs.

Well there you have it then. The engine is even more antiquated than I thought, almost 15 years older than me!

just to add to the secondray air pump point, if your secondray air inlet valve fails/sticks in the closed position it can casue the pump to do its dyson impression as its force feeding air into a closed valve. Also worth pointing out is that if said valve fails/sticks in the open position it can cause lean mixture faults.

    Paul....

I agree with others here. I've personally experienced this fault. Where it's more of a mechanical, gear/chain nasty noise, rather than a sudden rush of air/suction noise!

Just to add to what others have said here though, my car a 2001 S3 had this problem when i bought it. It didn't put me off, i really did think that it was a heatshield rattling somewhere inside the engine bay or something which was loose, metal on metal.

However, it turns out that the VVTI unit and timing chain system was at fault. Was advised by Audi not to drive it and to get it done there and then. I.e leave the car with them.

It does all depend on how bad this is on a particular car but it is NOT supposed to do this when the engine is working as it should, even on startup. All the information i'm stating here comes from Audi GMBH and a main dealer head technician.

The issue with this failure is the oil return pick up pipework, which has a filter at the bottom end (sump) this when using Long Life service intervals gets cloggy and blocked due to the rough consistency of the oil over a prolonged period of time.

When the timing chain tensioner has no oil pressure to mechanically work it fails to operate the tensioner, thus leaving a slackened chain. Mine was overly noisy and was aparent during gear changes also. Which was kinda scarey and that is what made me orignially think oh the exhaust is moving slightly and this was the heatshield rattle etc.

So 500 lighter in the pocket (Dealer agreed to pay 3/4 of money required) i ended up with a complete new VVTI unit, timing chain, tensioner, oil return pickup pipework, metal prop water pump, oil pump, cam belt, sensors and all the other consumables which were required.

I had a full service carried out, then had another one 3 months later to make sure the oil was nice. Due another one in a month or so. In all fairness the car was and still is running much much nicer. I chose a specialist in the end as i felt that he would carry out a better job and i'd not have monkeys spunking over the car. I'm particular where i take my car to be worked on and i am still very very happy with my choice.

In my opinion, if you have the money to get the car done now, do it. It's only going to get worse like mine did and you will eventually have to get it done. You could sell the car as is, but if you are like me you love you car and won't want to part with it.

Just an insight from someone who actually went through it start to finish! Another forum user by the name of NAK has recently done this. He even had two different engine types and used the VVTI unit and timing gear from another engine code to fix his problem.

It can be done cheaply but i wouldn't want my chain snapping or my car underperforming. Timing chain is a very very important integral part of engines which use this method.

    Hope that helps!

    G

    hi guys

i just checked my service book and it says the cambelt was done last year in december - so i dont see how the problem can be with the timing belt?

anyways i was thinking i should just ignore it as it can be a number of things and i may just end up wasting loads of money and may never correct the thing...its only happening on startup and sounds fine on stand still and driving...it could be something that happens in winter and if something does go wrong in the future at least ill know what it is that has gone wrong and ill be able to replace the part - rather than wasting money trying to fix this one thing.

Dragonstyle- Your Timing Chain is totally different to your cambelt and if you wait for your timing chain to fail it will then be way too late to simply change the part as your engine will be shot.

If your worried about it then take it to a decent audi garage/ specialist and get them to look over it.

As a lot of other people have said the S3s do sound crap on start up.

I personally wouldn't worry about it dragonstyle, you do get a degree of noise when you first start the car up, its common knowledge on the 1.8T lump...

If the car settles down nicely as you say I really wouldn't be to concerned...

Couldn't find S3 engine sounds but should help you hopefully, 1.8t's have pretty much the same start and idle

Its hard to get a good engine sound through a basic digital camera but tbh I didn't think any of the eninges sound the best in them clips, the second one sounds like the divert valve isn't working or just isn't fitted as its making a bit of an air chop noise when the throttle is closed.
