    Question Lost 1st and 2nd Gear

    Hi all, i'm looking for help or info on this problem, a bit of history on it first,
    I've had the car about 6-8 months now and as long as i can remember when selecting 1st and secong there was always a slight grind as if the cluch wasn't pressed properly, it was ok for 3-6th, anyway after driving to and from manchester yesterday (about a 300mile round trip) as i was pulling away from a junction (or attempting to) and i lost 1st and second gear, there was no noise to indicate anything was wrong, one min they were there, the next they weren't, when trying to select them, there is no resistance whatsoever, it's like they have simply disapeared? it's going into the garage today, but any advice would be great so i know roughly waht to expect.

    Oh and the car is a 2000 plate S3 with about 120k on the clock, totally standard. Cheers

    Bad news bud, same thing happened to mine, the fork that select 1st and 2nd had broke, probably same has happened to yours, gearbox out job and whilst its being done get the clutch, slave cylinder, master cylinder done, it cost me a fair bit! Sorry bobby

    Yep, had a quote from the garage, 8 hours labour, gearbox rebuild and new clutch, 2 grand. got it home and planning on stripping the front end completely, engine and gearbox out, might as well overhaul the lump while its going to be off the road. absolutely gutted :-(

    A used box will only set you back a few hundred quid. If you are handy with the spanners then no reason for it to be 2k

    2k's a bit extreme, mine was done under 1k that's with the clutch done too, i'm sure the whole box doesn't need rebuilding

    2k is waaay too much, just get yourself a used box for around 300-350 off fleabay, new clutch kit around 150-200, labour to change everything from a gearbox specialist 250-300, might need to factor in getting your car to said specialist. 900 max and you are back on the road!

    Thanks for the responses guys, a few of my mates have said the same, that 2k is way WAY too much, been quoted 390 for a box re-build, so will probably head down that route, just need to find some spare time to get the spannes out.

    Just an update on what happened, the fork selector had broke dropping the pinon gear, had the box into a specialist and sorted, while he was on he found the diff to be knackered too, so that ended up being rebiult, had a dual mass fly wheel fitted, a new performance clutch, slave cylinder and the front cv boots replaced while it was in bits, all in came to 1750, bit gutted on the cost, but back on the road now so all good.

    Ouch! At least that lot should be good for another 120K miles
