Is my clutch on the way out?

    Good afternoon all,

First post as an s3 owner, having came from a Lotus Elise...bit of a change

First and second gears are fine however anything higher than that, when the revs get to about 3k revs the revs rise quite quickly to between 4 and 4.5k and kind of stay there untill you reach the speed you would expect the car to be at then increase normally as you would expect.

This doesn't happen through light acceleration but if I press the loud pedal hard from around the 3k mark the above is experienced. I think it is the clutch slipping but I don't want to go shelling out 400 beans if it's something else. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Lee

    Welcome mate,

Yeah sounds like it's slipping on hard acceleration as the boost comes in...

Hi Lee. I had a S1 Elise a few years back, getting into a normal car again is the best feeling ever. No struggling to get in and out, no leaking roof, a real seat to sit on

It does sound like your clutch is on its way. Try banging the car into 3rd or 4th gear when doing about 20mph and floor it. Wait for the turbo to kick in and the revs to climb and see if you experience the slippage.

Yeah it is nice having a warm comfortable car in the cold and wet! I do miss my s1 though

What you have advised to do it exactly when the issue occurs, I'm confident it is the clutch I just wanted to make sure. Remap will have to wait till next month

Yeah I miss the Elise too ven though I love my S3, it was just so raw and entertaining.

If you get a new clutch you'll probably notice your car will feel much better anyway then get the remap. It might be worth looking at an uprated clutch as opposed to going stadard again if you're going to remap. I'm not too clued up on clutches as I've only ever had to replace one out of 6 cars but someone else will recommend which one to get.

If I was going to uprate the clutch I'd go for sachs kit, though they are about a grand all in...

I don't know to be honest, the clutch slipping down to torque on a remap is always a slight worry, so I've looked out for uprated ones and the sachs kit keeps rearing it's head, I know Jabba sell the kit and so do big boys toys AmD, suppose to be good for approx 330lb ft, if mine ever does give up the ghost then it's going to cost a few hundred quid anyway, so I'd just pay the extra and get the sach, I think it's meant to feel pretty much oem, maybe slightly heavier...

I can deal with a heavy clutch as my old R5 Turbo used to be like a ton of bricks, the driver of you average car would stall it 4 or 5 times before getting used to it.

I just cant deal with a 1K bill

Haha, yeah I know...a lot of cash, hopefully the clutch will last the duration it's in my possesion, if it didn't then I'd uprate it...I think, unless I was going to sell close to having it done, then I'd just chuck a standard back in...

The guys fitting it for me at MB motorsports (Audi specialists) near Newcastle, who are also an official Jabbasport agent have quoted me 392.44 all in, using a Sachs clutch on the basis that I advised I would be getting it remapped by them very soon. A little bit cheaper than a grand!

Thats seems way too cheap mate, the sachs uprated clutch is more than that just to buy. And the cost of labour for a clutch change is high. Although worth bearing in mind that you may well need a new flywheel too. The symptoms you are having sound similar to those i had when my dual mass flywheel packed in.

I doubt it's an uprated sachs clutch...if you looky here http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Au...d911e097198801 The sachs clutch is only 125 notes so I think the price is spot on. The fella quoted about 6 hours labour so around 45 an hour is about what I'd expect to pay for labour.

Oh right i miss understood your post mate, i thought you were getting an uprated sachs item. Just make sure its not the flywheel thats at fault or budget a couple of hundred quid to chage that too, also might be worth changing the slave cylinder too if they arent already, while the gearbox is out its only 30ish.

    I thought the VR6 / G60 conversion was A3 only, not S3?
Does it work in the S3?
I think my clutch is starting to slip, this conversion could be a good remedy!

The VR6 clutch upgrade is only suitable for the A3, the S3 uses a different size clutch to the A3.

Think I might need my clutch doing soon (no interest in getting it uprated though).

For us newbies, who are amd?
