Temperature warning light / bleep?

A friend has a T-reg 1.8T Sport that's only on 55k miles that he's wanting to sell.... it's FSH and generally in very good condition, but he's wanting top-money for it (OTT IMO), but it does have the temp warning symbol on the LCD* flashing (and a loud beep) within a minute or so of driving... it goes away within another minute, but it does set a pretty rotten impression for what is otehrwise a pretty tight car... he's taken it to Audi who've said that there's nothing wrong, but I reckon he needs to get it fixed, if possible.

Any advice?

* which is the other issue: the LCD screen is missing half the lines - any tips on this also muchly appreciated!!

My R32 used to do that, I changed the coolant and put a new coolant tank in and it's never came up again.

That's not very professional from Audi to say there's nothing wrong when there's sodding bells and lights flashing!
